Clear answers to the most searched questions about sweet orange oil: grades, uses, safety, purity, storage and buying in bulk
Answers from the quality team at Liana Health Care Pvt. Ltd., Meerut, India, a bulk supplier, wholesaler and exporter of cold pressed sweet orange oil since 2010.
Orange oil, also called sweet orange oil, is an essential oil cold pressed from the peel of the sweet orange, Citrus sinensis. It has a bright, sweet, fresh orange aroma and is used in cleaners, soaps, candles, room sprays, flavours and perfumery.
Orange is called santra or narangi in Hindi, so orange oil is known as Santra oil or Narangi ka tel.
Most orange oil is cold pressed from the fresh peel, which keeps its bright, natural aroma. Some orange oil is steam distilled from the peel, giving a lighter, cheaper grade.
The main component is d-limonene, at about 90% to 97%. Orange oil also contains myrcene, alpha-pinene, linalool and small amounts of decanal and other aldehydes that give its fresh orange character.
Sweet orange oil comes from Citrus sinensis and has a sweet, juicy aroma. Bitter orange oil comes from Citrus aurantium, has a drier, sharper aroma and needs care in sunlight, because the cold pressed oil can cause skin reactions.
Folded orange oils, such as five-fold and ten-fold oil, are concentrated by removing part of the limonene. They have a stronger, longer-lasting orange aroma and are used in flavours and fine fragrance.
Orange oil is used in kitchen and floor cleaners, degreasers, soaps, hand wash, candles, room and linen sprays, diffuser blends, body care, perfumes and food and beverage flavours.
Orange oil is rich in d-limonene, a natural solvent that helps dissolve grease and sticky residues, and it gives cleaners a fresh, pleasant aroma.
Sweet orange oil is used in soaps, body wash, lotions and body oils for its cheerful citrus aroma, usually at 0.5% to 1%. Use fresh oil, as oxidised orange oil can irritate skin.
Sweet orange oil is generally not considered a sun-sensitising oil, unlike bergamot, lemon, lime and bitter orange. It should still be diluted and used at normal levels.
Yes. Food grade orange oil is one of the most used natural flavours in beverages, confectionery and bakery. Food use needs flavour grade oil and the required food licences.
Clove, cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, lavender, ylang ylang, cedarwood, frankincense, peppermint and lemongrass all blend well with orange oil.
No. Orange oil should be diluted in a carrier oil or product base and patch tested. Old, oxidised orange oil is likelier to cause skin sensitivity.
Yes. Orange oil is a flammable liquid. Store and ship it away from heat, sparks and flames, as per the MSDS.
Products for young children should only be made after expert safety advice. Keep concentrated orange oil away from pets, especially cats.
Orange oil keeps for about 1 to 2 years, a shorter period than most essential oils, because limonene oxidises in air. Store it in tightly closed, full, dark containers in a cool place, and add an antioxidant for long storage.
A GC test is the best check. Pure orange oil has natural limonene, aldehyde and minor component levels. Added synthetic limonene or cheaper terpenes change the profile and lower the aldehyde content.
ISO 3140 covers sweet orange oil. It sets the expected density, refractive index, optical rotation and aldehyde content.
Orange oil naturally contains limonene, linalool and citral in small amounts. Batch allergen values are given on request for labelling and IFRA calculations.
Orange oil prices depend on the grade, origin, crop and quantity. Cold pressed and folded oils cost the most. Contact Liana Health Care on WhatsApp for the best price per kg today.
Liana Health Care supplies orange oil from 100 ml trial packs up to 200 kg drums, in aluminium bottles, HDPE cans and drums. MOQ is flexible.
Yes. A COA comes with every batch. GC report, MSDS and samples are available on request.
