Pure Natural Thymol | Sat Ajwain | Pharmaceutical Grade | Cosmetic Grade | Agricultural Grade | Food Grade | Retail from 100gm | Bulk to 25kg | Manufacturer-Direct Wholesale Pricing | Pan-India Delivery | Export Supply | Est. 2010 Meerut India

Thymol Crystals — also known as Sat Ajwain, Ajwain Sat, and Thymol — are pure, naturally derived crystalline compounds extracted primarily from Ajwain essential oil (Trachyspermum ammi) in India, and also from Thyme essential oil (Thymus vulgaris) internationally. They appear as colourless to off-white crystalline solids with a powerful, warm, herbal, and intensely medicinal aroma — and possess exceptional antibacterial, antifungal, antiseptic, and anti-inflammatory properties that make them one of the most important natural active ingredients in oral care, pharmaceutical, cosmetic, agricultural, and food preservation manufacturing.

Liana Health Care Pvt. Ltd. is a trusted B2B wholesale supplier of pure Thymol Crystals in India — founded in 2010 by Surjeet Singh in Meerut, Uttar Pradesh. We supply pharmaceutical grade, cosmetic grade, agricultural grade, and food grade Thymol Crystals in retail packs from 100gm for startups and bulk packs from 500gm to 25kg for manufacturers — with manufacturer-direct wholesale pricing, pan-India delivery, and export supply.

What Is Thymol? — The Science Behind Thymol Crystals

Thymol (chemical name: 5-Methyl-2-isopropylphenol, CAS: 89-83-8) is a naturally occurring monoterpene phenol — one of the most biologically active compounds found in the plant kingdom. It is the primary active component of Ajwain essential oil (45% to 55% thymol content) and Thyme essential oil (20% to 55% thymol content) — and one of the four active ingredients in the world's most famous antiseptic mouthwash formulations.

What makes thymol scientifically exceptional is its dual mechanism of antimicrobial action — it disrupts bacterial cell membranes AND inhibits bacterial enzyme activity — making it effective against a broad spectrum of bacteria and fungi that have developed resistance to single-mechanism antimicrobials. This dual action is why thymol remains one of the most relevant natural antimicrobial ingredients in modern pharmaceutical and oral care manufacturing.

Aroma Profile of Thymol Crystals

Top Note: Sharp, pungent, and intensely spicy — the first impression is immediate, powerful, and unmistakably medicinal. Reminiscent of fresh Ajwain seeds and medicinal thyme.

Middle Note: Warm, herbal, and medicinal — a rich herbal warmth develops as the sharp top note settles. Strongly reminiscent of traditional Indian Ayurvedic medicines and herbal preparations.

Base Note: Slightly sweet, earthy, and phenolic — a clean, medicinal base note with subtle earthy undertones. The lasting impression is one of natural antiseptic purity.

What Are Thymol Crystals Used For — Complete Manufacturing Guide

Antiseptic Mouthwash Manufacturing

Thymol is one of the four original active ingredients in classic Listerine-style antiseptic mouthwash formulations — alongside Eucalyptol, Methyl Salicylate, and Menthol. This formulation has been the gold standard for antiseptic mouthwash for over a century — and thymol's role in it is as a powerful antibacterial agent targeting the gram-positive and gram-negative oral bacteria responsible for plaque formation, gingivitis, and bad breath.

Thymol works in mouthwash by disrupting the cell membranes of oral bacteria — killing them directly rather than simply inhibiting their growth. This bactericidal (bacteria-killing) mechanism makes it significantly more effective than many synthetic antibacterial agents used in modern mouthwash formulations.

Typical Usage Rate in Antiseptic Mouthwash: 0.064% (standard concentration as per established oral care formulations)

How to Use : Dissolve Thymol Crystals in ethanol first — then add the ethanol-thymol solution to the aqueous mouthwash base. Thymol does not dissolve directly in water — it must always be pre-dissolved in ethanol or another suitable alcohol before incorporation into aqueous oral care formulations.

Toothpaste & Tooth Gel Manufacturing

Thymol is used as an antibacterial active ingredient in therapeutic toothpastes targeting plaque control, gum disease prevention, and oral hygiene — particularly in herbal, Ayurvedic, and natural toothpaste formulations where synthetic antibacterial agents like triclosan are being replaced by natural alternatives.

Typical Usage Rate in Toothpaste: 0.1% to 0.3%

How to Use: Pre-dissolve Thymol Crystals in propylene glycol or ethanol before incorporating into the toothpaste base. Add during the cool phase of manufacturing.

Dental Varnishes & Cavity Prevention

Thymol is used in dental varnishes, dental sealants, and cavity prevention products — its antibacterial properties target Streptococcus mutans, the primary bacteria responsible for dental caries (tooth decay). Thymol-based dental products are widely used in professional dentistry for cavity prevention and tooth surface protection.

Oral Spray & Breath Fresheners

Thymol-based oral sprays for breath freshening and oral antiseptic applications — the strong herbal, medicinal character of thymol combined with its genuine antibacterial activity makes it effective in antibacterial breath freshening products.

2. Pharmaceutical Manufacturing

Antiseptic Creams & Wound Healing Products

Thymol's powerful antibacterial and antifungal properties make it an effective active ingredient in antiseptic skin creams, wound healing ointments, and topical pharmaceutical preparations for skin infections and wound care.

Typical Usage Rate in Antiseptic Creams: 0.5% to 1%

Antifungal Pharmaceutical Formulations

Thymol has demonstrated strong antifungal activity against a wide range of fungal pathogens — making it valuable in antifungal pharmaceutical creams and ointments targeting fungal skin infections including athlete's foot, ringworm, nail fungus, and candidal skin infections.

Typical Usage Rate in Antifungal Creams: 0.5% to 2%

Cough & Cold Pharmaceutical Formulations

Thymol is used in cough and cold pharmaceutical formulations — its expectorant properties and respiratory antibacterial activity make it valuable in cough syrups, chest rubs, and respiratory wellness products.

Pharmaceutical Grade Preservative

Thymol is used as a natural antimicrobial preservative in topical pharmaceutical formulations — replacing synthetic preservatives like parabens and phenol in natural and clean-label pharmaceutical products.

Ayurvedic & Unani Medicinal Formulations

Sat Ajwain (Thymol) is an important ingredient in Ayurvedic and Unani medicine — used in digestive formulations, respiratory preparations, and antimicrobial Ayurvedic products. Classical Ayurvedic and Unani texts describe Ajwain and its active principles for their digestive, carminative, and antimicrobial properties.

3. Cosmetic & Personal Care Manufacturing

Antibacterial Soaps & Body Washes

Thymol is used in antibacterial soap and body wash formulations — providing natural antibacterial activity against skin bacteria without synthetic antibacterial agents like triclosan.

Typical Usage Rate in Antibacterial Soap: 0.1% to 0.5%

Antifungal Foot Creams & Foot Care

Thymol's strong antifungal activity makes it ideal for foot care product manufacturing targeting athlete's foot, fungal nail infections, and foot odour caused by bacterial and fungal activity.

Typical Usage Rate in Foot Creams: 1% to 2%

Anti-Dandruff & Scalp Treatment Shampoos

Thymol is used in anti-dandruff and scalp treatment shampoo formulations — targeting the fungal causes of dandruff (Malassezia fungus) and providing antibacterial scalp treatment alongside other active ingredients.

Typical Usage Rate in Anti-Dandruff Shampoo: 0.1% to 0.3%

Acne Treatment Products

Thymol's antibacterial properties target acne-causing bacteria — making it valuable in natural and herbal acne treatment face washes, spot treatments, and anti-acne skincare formulations.

Typical Usage Rate in Acne Treatment: 0.1% to 0.5%

Natural Cosmetic Preservative

Thymol is used as a natural antimicrobial preservative in cosmetic formulations — extending product shelf life without synthetic parabens or formaldehyde-releasing preservatives. Valued by natural, organic, and clean beauty brands.

Deodorant Products

Thymol's antibacterial properties target the odour-causing bacteria responsible for body odour — making it an effective natural active ingredient in deodorant and antiperspirant product manufacturing.

4. Agricultural Applications — Growing Market

Agricultural use of Thymol is one of the fastest-growing applications globally — driven by increasing demand for organic and natural pest control alternatives to synthetic chemical pesticides.

Organic Pesticide & Biopesticide Formulations

Thymol is an effective natural fungicide, bactericide, and insecticide — used in organic pesticide and biopesticide formulations targeting a wide range of agricultural pests and fungal plant diseases. Its mechanism of action — disrupting fungal cell membranes and inhibiting bacterial enzyme systems — makes it effective against pathogens that have developed resistance to synthetic pesticides.

Beekeeping — Varroa Mite Treatment

Thymol is one of the most widely used natural treatments for Varroa destructor — the parasitic mite that is the most serious global threat to honeybee colonies and the beekeeping industry. Thymol-based products (oxalic acid + thymol formulations) are approved for use in organic beekeeping and are among the most effective natural Varroa treatments available.

This is a significant and growing application for Thymol Crystals in India — as the Indian beekeeping industry grows and demand for natural, residue-free Varroa treatments increases.

Agricultural Grade Thymol — NOT cosmetic or pharmaceutical grade — should be used for beekeeping applications.

5. Food Industry Applications

Food Grade Preservative

Food grade Thymol is used as a natural antimicrobial preservative in food products — approved for use in food preservation applications subject to FSSAI regulations and applicable food safety standards.

Food Flavouring

Thymol is a primary flavour compound of thyme — used in food grade concentrations as a natural flavouring agent in thyme-flavoured foods, herbal food products, and natural flavour preparations.

Beverage Flavouring

Natural thyme-flavoured beverages and herbal drinks use food grade thymol as a flavouring component.

Important: Only food grade Thymol Crystals certified under FSSAI regulations should be used in any food manufacturing application. It is the manufacturer's sole responsibility to verify food safety compliance before use.

6. Veterinary Products

Thymol is used in veterinary antiseptic and wound care products — for its broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity against animal pathogens. Also used in beekeeping for Varroa mite treatment as noted above.

Formulation Tips for Manufacturers

Tip 1 — Thymol Does Not Dissolve in Water
Thymol Crystals are not water soluble — they must always be pre-dissolved in ethanol, propylene glycol, or isopropyl alcohol before incorporation into aqueous formulations like mouthwash, toothpaste, shampoo, or body wash. Adding thymol directly to water results in incomplete dissolution, cloudiness, and formulation instability.

Tip 2 — Thymol Has a Low Melting Point
With a melting point of 48°C to 51°C, Thymol Crystals will melt if exposed to temperatures above 50°C during storage or manufacturing. This is normal and does not affect quality — allow to cool and re-solidify before use. In summer months or warm climates, store in a cool location to prevent liquefaction.

Tip 3 — Strong Aroma Requires Careful Dosing
Thymol has an extremely powerful, medicinal aroma — small amounts produce a very strong herbal, medicinal character in finished products. Always start at the lower end of recommended usage rates and increase gradually based on sensory evaluation and consumer testing.

Tip 4 — Thymol in Soap Making
Thymol Crystals can be used in antibacterial cold process and melt & pour soap formulations — pre-dissolve in a carrier oil or in a small amount of ethanol before adding to the soap base for uniform distribution. Be aware that thymol's low melting point means it will melt during hot process soap making — add during the cool-down phase.

Tip 5 — Agricultural Use — Dilution is Critical
For agricultural and beekeeping applications — thymol must be used at the correct concentrations as per formulation guidelines and regulatory requirements. Undiluted thymol can be phytotoxic (harmful to plants) at high concentrations — always follow established formulation guidance and regulatory guidelines for your specific agricultural application.

Tip 6 — Always Request COA from Your Supplier
Request Certificate of Analysis confirming thymol purity percentage, melting point, and absence of adulteration. At Liana Health Care we provide COA, GC-MS analysis reports, and MSDS documentation for all Thymol Crystals we supply on request.

Question. What is the natural source of Thymol Crystals in India?

In India, Thymol Crystals are primarily extracted from Ajwain (Trachyspermum ammi) — also known as Carom Seeds — which contain the highest natural concentration of thymol of any plant grown commercially in India. Ajwain oil typically contains 45% to 55% thymol content — making it the most commercially viable and widely used source of natural thymol in India.

Thymol is also found naturally in Thyme (Thymus vulgaris), Oregano (Origanum vulgare), and certain varieties of Basil — but Ajwain remains the primary Indian source for commercial thymol extraction.

Question : What is the difference between Thymol Crystals and Menthol Crystals?

Property Thymol Crystals Menthol Crystals
Natural Source Thyme oil / Ajwain oil Peppermint oil / Corn mint oil
Aroma Warm, herbal, medicinal Cool, fresh, minty
Primary Property Antibacterial, antifungal, antiseptic Cooling, analgesic, decongestant
Primary Use Oral care, antiseptic, pharmaceutical Pain relief, oral care, respiratory
Solubility Soluble in alcohol and oils Soluble in alcohol and oils
Appearance Colourless to off-white crystals White to off-white translucent crystals

Both are used in oral care and pharmaceutical manufacturing — but Thymol is primarily valued for its powerful antimicrobial properties while Menthol is valued for its cooling and analgesic properties.
