Basics
Q. What is candle fragrance oil?
Candle fragrance oil is a fragrance blend made to mix with wax and release a strong scent when the candle is unlit and while it burns.
Q. Fragrance oil vs essential oil for candles, which is better?
Fragrance oils usually give a stronger, steadier scent throw in candles. Essential oils are natural but often give a weaker hot throw and are costlier.
Q. What is hot throw and cold throw in candles?
Cold throw is the scent of an unlit candle. Hot throw is the scent released while the candle burns.
Q. Can I use cosmetic fragrance oil in candles?
Often yes, if the IFRA certificate allows candles and the oil suits your wax. Candle fragrance oils are tested for wax and burn performance.
Making Scented Candles
Q. How much fragrance oil per kg of wax?
Most candles use 60 to 100 g of fragrance oil per kg of wax, a fragrance load of 6% to 10%. Soy wax is usually 8% to 10%.
Q. How much fragrance oil per pound of wax?
About 1 oz of fragrance oil per pound of wax gives a 6% load. Many soy candles use 1.3 to 1.6 oz per pound.
Q. At what temperature should I add fragrance oil to soy wax?
Most soy waxes take fragrance at about 75°C to 85°C. Stir gently for 2 minutes, then follow your wax maker’s pour temperature.
Q. How long should candles cure before burning?
Soy candles need about 1 to 2 weeks to cure for full scent. Paraffin candles need about 2 to 3 days.
Q. How can I make my candles smell stronger?
Use a high-throw candle fragrance oil at 8% to 10%, add it at the right temperature, choose the correct wick size, and let soy candles cure for 1 to 2 weeks. A weak scent usually comes from one of these.
Q. Why is fragrance oil sweating out of my candle?
Too much fragrance oil, a wax that cannot hold that load, or warm storage can cause oil to seep out. Reduce the load or change the wax.
Safety and Quality
Q. What is the flash point of candle fragrance oil and does it matter?
Flash point is the temperature at which the oil vapour can ignite. It matters for safe handling and shipping. Most of our candle grades are above 65°C. Check the MSDS for each fragrance.
Q. Are scented candles toxic or safe?
Candles made with good quality fragrance oils, used within IFRA limits and the right load, are considered safe for normal home use. Burn them in a ventilated room, trim the wick and never leave them unattended.
Q. Are your candle fragrance oils phthalate-free?
Phthalate-free candle fragrance oils are available on request, with the matching documents.
Q. Can candle fragrance oils be used in diffusers or soaps?
Some can. Check the IFRA certificate and test in each product, as candle grades are made mainly for wax.
Q. What is the shelf life of candle fragrance oil?
Usually 12 to 24 months in sealed packing, stored cool and dark.
