It is an essential oil steam distilled from the leaves of the blue gum tree (Eucalyptus globulus). It is rich in 1,8-cineole, which gives its fresh, cooling aroma.
Globulus oil is high in cineole and smells fresh and camphor-like. Citriodora oil is high in citronellal and smells lemony; it is mostly used in repellents and fragrances.
The rectified 80–85% cineole grade is most commonly used for balms, rubs, inhalers and pharma formulations.
Its high cineole content gives a strong, cooling vapour that people associate with a clear nose and easy breathing. That is why it is a standard ingredient in cold-care products.
Most pain and cold balms use around 5–15% eucalyptus oil along with menthol and camphor. The exact level depends on the formula and the strength you want.
