Eucalyptus Citriodora Oil Uses and Starter Formulations – Part 1: Basics and Formulas 1 to 5

Lemon eucalyptus oil for startups and learners: equipment, dilution guide, choosing the grade and 5 practical formulas

• Startups and small brands planning outdoor care roll-ons, sprays, creams, candles, cleaners or incense with lemon eucalyptus oil.
• Students and learners in cosmetics, home care and aromatherapy who want reliable starting formulas.
• Small manufacturers who want to test products at 100 g to 1 kg scale before bulk production.
• All formulas are given in percentage (% w/w) and grams, so they are easy to scale up.

Basic equipment

• Digital scale with 0.01 g accuracy for essential oils and a 1 g scale for bases.
• Stainless steel or heat-proof glass beakers, a double boiler (water bath) and a thermometer up to 100°C.
• Glass rods or silicone spatulas, a small hand blender for creams, and measuring cylinders.
• Packaging: amber glass or aluminium bottles, roll-on bottles, fine-mist sprays, jars, candle tins and soap moulds.
• Gloves, safety glasses, labels and a batch record notebook.

Safe working rules

• Always weigh essential oils in grams. Drops vary, so use them only for very small home tests.
• Citronellal can cause skin allergy in some people. Keep skin products at the levels given and patch test before use.
• Never heat essential oils on an open flame. Add them after the base has cooled.
• Avoid polystyrene cups and thin PVC, as concentrated oils can attack these plastics.
• Work in a ventilated area and keep oils away from eyes and children.

Quick maths: For a 100 g batch, 1% = 1 g. For a 1 kg batch, 1% = 10 g. Always calculate on the total batch weight.

A simple oil roll-on for arms, legs and neck during outdoor use. An easy first product for new brands.

Batch size: 100 ml (ten 10 ml roll-ons)

Method

1. Weigh the carrier oil into a clean, dry glass beaker.
2. Add vitamin E and the essential oils one by one, stirring after each.
3. Rest for 1 hour, then check aroma and clarity.
4. Fill into glass roll-on bottles and cap tightly.

Formulator tips

• Fractionated coconut oil stays liquid in winter, unlike normal coconut oil.
• Use glass roll-ons, as some plastics soften with essential oils.

Caution: For adults. Not for children under 3 years. Avoid face and eyes. Patch test first. Products sold with insect-protection claims need registration under the Insecticides Act (CIB&RC) in India.

A light, non-greasy spray, popular with families and travellers.

Batch size: 100 ml

Method

1. Mix Polysorbate 20 with both essential oils until clear.
2. Add glycerin and stir.
3. Slowly add the water while stirring.
4. Add the preservative, mix well and fill into fine-mist spray bottles.

Formulator tips

• If the spray looks cloudy, raise Polysorbate 20 to 6% and reduce water.
• Label: "Shake well before use".

Caution: Do not spray on the face or near eyes. Not for children under 3 years. Insect-protection claims need registration.

A light everyday cream. A good first step into emulsions for learners.

Batch size: 100 g

Method

1. Heat water and glycerin to 75°C in one beaker.
2. Heat oil, emulsifying wax and cetyl alcohol to 75°C in another beaker.
3. Pour the oil phase into the water phase while mixing with a hand blender for 2 to 3 minutes.
4. Keep stirring gently while it cools.
5. Below 40°C, add citriodora oil and preservative and mix well.
6. Check pH (5.5 to 6.5) and fill into tubes or jars.

Formulator tips

• Both phases must be at the same temperature, or the cream can separate.
• For a thicker cream, raise cetyl alcohol to 3% and reduce water.

Caution: For adults. Not for face or children under 3 years. Patch test first. Insect-protection claims need registration.

A popular product for gardens, balconies and cafes.

Batch size: 200 g (one candle tin)

Method

1. Fix a suitable wick in the centre of the tin.
2. Melt the wax in a double boiler to the temperature your wax supplier advises (usually 75–85°C).
3. Remove from heat, add the oils and stir gently for 2 minutes.
4. Pour at the supplier advised pouring temperature and keep the wick centred.
5. Cure for 2 to 3 days before burning.

Formulator tips

• Check the maximum fragrance load of your wax, usually 6% to 10%.
• Wide outdoor tins need a thicker wick or two wicks.

Caution: Never leave a burning candle unattended. Keep away from children, pets and anything that can catch fire.

A concentrated blend for diffusers and electric vaporisers. A low-cost product with high perceived value.

Batch size: 100 g (ten 10 ml bottles)

Method

1. Mix all oils in a glass beaker.
2. Rest for 24 hours to let the blend mature.
3. Fill into amber glass bottles with dropper fitments.

Formulator tips

• Use 3 to 5 drops in a diffuser water tank.
• Label clearly: "Not for direct skin use".

Caution: Do not diffuse near infants. Keep out of reach of children. Harmful if swallowed.
