Basics
Q. What are cosmetic fragrance oils?
Fragrance blends made for skin and hair products such as creams, lotions, shampoos and perfumes, documented for skin contact and used within IFRA limits.
Q. What is the difference between fragrance oil and essential oil?
Essential oils are natural plant extracts. Fragrance oils are blends of aroma materials designed for a stable, consistent scent, including notes no plant gives, such as strawberry or musk.
Q. What is the difference between cosmetic and candle fragrance oil?
Cosmetic fragrance oils are documented for skin contact. Candle fragrance oils are made for wax and may not suit skin products.
Q. What is the INCI name for fragrance oil?
It is listed as Parfum or Fragrance. Some markets also require allergens such as linalool or limonene to be named.
Using Fragrance Oils
Q. How much fragrance oil should I add to lotion?
Most body lotions use 0.3% to 1%, and face creams 0.1% to 0.5%. Check the IFRA certificate for your product.
Q. How much fragrance oil should I use in soap?
Melt and pour soap usually takes 1% to 2%, and cold process soap 2% to 3% of the oils.
Q. What is the difference between leave-on and rinse-off use?
Leave-on products such as creams and perfumes stay on the skin, so IFRA limits are lower. Rinse-off products such as shampoo and body wash allow higher levels.
Q. Can I use fragrance oils in lip balm?
Only fragrances whose IFRA certificate allows lip products, at very low levels. Ask us for lip-safe options.
Q. Why did my cream turn brown after adding fragrance?
Vanilla-type fragrances contain vanillin, which can turn white products tan or brown. Ask us for low-discolouration options.
Safety and Compliance
Q. Are fragrance oils safe for skin?
Cosmetic grade fragrance oils are safe when used diluted, within IFRA limits. Never apply them undiluted, and patch test finished products.
Q. What is IFRA and an IFRA certificate?
IFRA, the International Fragrance Association, sets safe use levels for fragrance materials. Our IFRA certificate states the maximum safe level of each fragrance for every product category.
Q. Do fragrance oils contain allergens?
Many contain natural allergens such as linalool or limonene. We provide allergen declarations for correct labelling.
Q. Can fragrance oils be used in baby products?
Only very mild fragrances at very low levels in rinse-off products, after a safety assessment.
Q. Can fragrance oil be used in food?
No. Cosmetic fragrance oils are not food grade.
Q. What is the shelf life of fragrance oils?
Usually 12 to 24 months in sealed packing, stored cool and dark in aluminium or amber containers.
