  4. Pour into moulds, spray with rubbing alcohol, set 2 to 4 hours and wrap at once.

Quality Checks, Labelling and Common Mistakes

Quality checks

  • Keep one sample at 40–45°C for 2 to 4 weeks and check for changes, and retain a sample of every batch.

Labelling

  • Show product name, ingredients, net quantity, batch number, manufacturing and expiry dates, and manufacturer details.
  • For cosmetics, list allergens such as citral, geraniol and limonene where required.
  • Cosmetic, home care and insect repellent products need different licences or registrations in India. Check which applies before selling.

Common mistakes

  • Using too much lemongrass oil in skin products, which can cause irritation.
  • Adding essential oil to water without a solubiliser or surfactant.
  • Storing the oil in half-empty containers, which speeds up oxidation.

Start Small, Scale Up with Liana Health Care

  • Trial packs from 100 ml for R&D, bulk packs up to 200 kg for production.
  • Lemongrass oil plus citronella, eucalyptus, peppermint and soap bases from one supplier.
  • White label and contract manufacturing for brands without their own factory.

Disclaimer: These formulas are starting points for education and product development, not finished commercial formulations. Formulators must carry out their own stability, safety and compatibility testing and make sure products and labels meet all applicable laws before sale. This guide does not give medical advice. Answers from the quality team at Liana Health Care Pvt. Ltd., Meerut, India, a manufacturer, bulk supplier and exporter of 75% and high-citral lemongrass oil since 2010.

Lemongrass Oil Basics

Q. What is lemongrass oil?

Lemongrass oil is an essential oil steam-distilled from the leaves of lemongrass, mainly Cymbopogon flexuosus, grown widely in India. It has a strong, fresh, lemony aroma and is used in soaps, detergents, cleaners, outdoor care products, candles and perfumery.

Q. What is lemongrass called in Hindi?

Lemongrass is called Nimbu ghas in Hindi, and lemongrass oil is called Nimbu ghas ka tel.

Q. What is the main component of lemongrass oil?

The main component is citral, a natural mix of geranial and neral that gives the strong lemon aroma. Good lemongrass oil contains 75% to 85% citral.

Q. What does 75% citral lemongrass oil mean?

It means the oil contains at least 75% citral. 75% is the standard traded grade, while 80% and above is the high-citral grade with a stronger lemon note.

Q. What is the difference between East Indian and West Indian lemongrass oil?

East Indian lemongrass oil comes from Cymbopogon flexuosus and is the main type produced in India, with high citral. West Indian lemongrass oil comes from Cymbopogon citratus and has a softer aroma with slightly lower citral.

Q. Which lemongrass oil grade is best?

The 75% citral grade gives the best value for soaps, detergents, cleaners and incense. The 80% and above grade suits perfumery, cosmetics and natural citral production.

Uses of Lemongrass Oil

Q. What is lemongrass oil used for?

Lemongrass oil is used in soaps, detergents, floor cleaners, phenyl, outdoor care products, candles, agarbatti, room sprays, hair care and perfumery, and as a natural source of citral.

Q. Does lemongrass oil repel mosquitoes?

Lemongrass oil is widely used in outdoor care products, candles and sprays for its strong fresh aroma. In India, a product can only be sold as an insect repellent after registration with CIB&RC.

Q. Is lemongrass oil good for skin and hair?

Lemongrass oil is used at low levels in soaps, body wash, shampoos and hair oils for its fresh citrus aroma. Citral can irritate skin, so leave-on products should stay at about 0.5% or below.

Q. Can lemongrass oil be used in soaps and cleaners?

Yes. Lemongrass oil is one of the most popular oils for soaps, detergents, floor cleaners and phenyl because its strong lemon aroma lasts well and the oil is economical.

Q. What blends well with lemongrass oil?

Citronella, eucalyptus, tea tree, peppermint, geranium, lavender, cedarwood, ginger and sweet orange all blend well with lemongrass oil.

Safety of Lemongrass Oil

Q. Can lemongrass oil be applied directly to the skin?

No. Lemongrass oil is rich in citral, which can irritate skin and cause allergic reactions. It must be diluted, kept at low levels in leave-on products, and patch tested.

Q. Is lemongrass oil safe for children and during pregnancy?

Products for young children and for use during pregnancy should only be made after expert safety advice, at very low levels.

Q. Can lemongrass oil be swallowed?

No. Concentrated lemongrass oil should not be swallowed. Only flavour grade oil may be used in food, at approved levels, by licensed food manufacturers.

Q. What is the shelf life of lemongrass oil and how should it be stored?

Lemongrass oil keeps for about 2 years in sealed original packing. Store it in tightly closed, full, dark containers in a cool place, away from heat, light and air, as citral slowly oxidises.

Quality and Purity

Q. How can I check if lemongrass oil is pure?

A GC test is the best check. It confirms the citral level and natural minor components, and reveals added synthetic citral, litsea cubeba oil or solvents.

Q. Which ISO standard applies to lemongrass oil?

ISO 4718 covers lemongrass oil. It sets the expected density, refractive index, optical rotation and citral content.

Q. Which allergens are in lemongrass oil?

Lemongrass oil naturally contains citral, geraniol, limonene and linalool. Citral has IFRA limits, so batch values are given on request for labelling and IFRA calculations.
