  • Small manufacturers testing products at 100 g to 1 kg scale before bulk production.
  • Why lavender: the world’s most loved essential oil aroma, gentle at normal use levels and easy to sell in every season.
  • All formulas are in % w/w and grams, so they scale up easily. 1% = 1 g in a 100 g batch.

Formulator tips

  • Spray lightly on pillows and linen from about 30 cm.

  4. Below 40°C, add lavender oil, vitamin E and preservative.
  5. Check pH (5.5 to 6.5) and fill.

Formulator tips

  • Both phases must be at the same temperature, or the lotion can separate.

Formula 4: Lavender Melt and Pour Soap

An easy soap with no lye handling, with dried lavender buds for a natural look.

Batch size: 1 kg (about ten 100 g bars)

  4. Spray with rubbing alcohol, set 2 to 4 hours and wrap at once.

Formulator tips

  • Put buds only on top. Inside the bar they can turn brown.
  • Lavandin keeps its scent better in soap and costs less than true lavender.

Caution: Keep away from eyes. Stop use if irritation occurs.

Formula 5: Lavender Relaxing Bath Salts

A simple, high-margin gift product for spas and wellness stores.

Batch size: 250 g

Ingredient % w/w Quantity Function

Method

  1. Mix the two salts in a dry bowl.
  2. Add lavender oil slowly while mixing by hand (wear gloves) so it spreads evenly.
  3. Add the buds, rest covered for 24 hours, then pack in airtight jars.

Formulator tips

  • Use 2 to 3 tablespoons in a warm bath.
  • Pack airtight, as moisture makes salt lump.

Caution: Not for broken skin. Keep out of reach of children. Not for eating.

Formula 6: Lavender Soy Candle

A calming candle and one of the best-selling home fragrance products.

Batch size: 200 g (one candle jar)

Ingredient % w/w Quantity Function
Soy wax 92.0 % 184 g Base

  2. Melt the wax to the temperature your wax supplier advises (usually 75–85°C).
  3. Remove from heat, add the oils and stir gently for 2 minutes.
  4. Pour at the advised pouring temperature, keep the wick centred and cure 3 to 5 days.

Formulator tips

  • Cedarwood helps the lavender scent last longer when burning.
  • Check your wax’s maximum fragrance load, usually 6% to 10%.

Caution: Never leave a burning candle unattended. Keep away from children, pets and anything that can catch fire.

Quality Checks, Labelling and Common Mistakes

Quality checks

  • Keep one sample at 40–45°C for 2 to 4 weeks and check for changes, and retain a sample of every batch.

Labelling

  • Show product name, ingredients, net quantity, batch number, manufacturing and expiry dates, and manufacturer details.
  • List allergens such as linalool and limonene where required.
  • Use wording like "relaxing aroma" rather than medical claims such as "cures insomnia".

Common mistakes

  • Using expensive true lavender in soaps and candles where lavandin works well.
  • Using old or oxidised lavender oil in skin products.
  • Adding essential oil to water without a solubiliser.

Start Small, Scale Up with Liana Health Care

  • Trial packs from 100 ml for R&D, bulk packs up to 200 kg for production.
  • Lavender, lavandin and lavender 40/42 plus carrier oils, soap bases and other essential oils from one supplier.

Lavender Oil Basics

Q. What is lavender oil?

Lavender oil is an essential oil steam-distilled from the flowering tops of Lavandula angustifolia, grown mainly in France, Bulgaria and the Kashmir valley in India. It has a sweet, floral, herbaceous aroma and is one of the most widely used essential oils in the world.

Q. What is the difference between lavender oil and lavandin oil?

Lavender oil comes from Lavandula angustifolia and is soft, sweet and low in camphor. Lavandin oil comes from the hybrid Lavandula x intermedia, has higher camphor and cineole, a stronger aroma and a lower price.

Q. What is Lavender 40/42?

Lavender 40/42 is a standardised lavender oil adjusted to 40% to 42% esters, so its aroma is the same in every batch. It is popular for soaps and household products.

Q. What are the main components of lavender oil?

The main components are linalool (about 25% to 38%) and linalyl acetate (about 25% to 45%). Fine lavender oil also contains ocimene, terpinen-4-ol and lavandulyl acetate, with camphor below 0.5%.

Q. Is English lavender oil the same as Lavandula angustifolia oil?

Yes. English lavender is the common name for Lavandula angustifolia. The oil is produced in France, Bulgaria, India and other countries under the same botanical name.

Q. Which lavender oil is best?

It depends on the use. Lavender oil (L. angustifolia) is best for aromatherapy, skin care and fine fragrance. Lavandin or Lavender 40/42 gives better value for soaps, candles and home care.

Uses of Lavender Oil

Q. What is lavender oil used for?

Lavender oil is used in pillow and linen sprays, massage oils, lotions and creams, soaps, bath salts, candles, diffuser blends, hair care and perfumes.

Q. Is lavender oil good for sleep?

Lavender oil is the most popular aroma in sleep and relaxation products such as pillow sprays and diffuser blends, because of its calming scent. These are aroma products, not medicines.

Q. Is lavender oil good for skin?

Lavender oil is widely used in lotions, creams, face oils and after-sun products for its gentle floral aroma. It must be diluted, at about 0.5% in face products and up to 2% in body oils, and patch tested.

Q. Is lavender oil good for hair?

Lavender oil is added to hair oils, shampoos and conditioners for its pleasant floral aroma, usually at 0.5% to 1%, diluted in a carrier oil such as coconut or almond oil.

Q. Can lavender oil be used in soap and candles?

Yes. Lavandin or Lavender 40/42 is the usual choice for soaps at 1% to 2% and for candles within the wax fragrance load, because it holds its scent well and is cheaper.

Q. What blends well with lavender oil?

Bergamot FCF, sweet orange, lemon, cedarwood, geranium, ylang ylang, frankincense, patchouli and peppermint all blend well with lavender oil.

Safety of Lavender Oil

Q. Can lavender oil be applied directly to the skin?

No. Lavender oil should be diluted in a carrier oil or product base and patch tested. Old, oxidised lavender oil is likelier to cause skin sensitivity, so use fresh oil in skin products.

Q. Is lavender oil safe for children and during pregnancy?

Products for young children and for use during pregnancy should only be made after expert safety advice, at very low levels.

Q. Can lavender oil be taken by mouth?

No. Lavender oil should not be swallowed. Only flavour grade oil may be used in food, at approved levels, by licensed food manufacturers.

Q. What is the shelf life of lavender oil and how should it be stored?

Lavender oil keeps for about 2 years in sealed original packing. Store it in tightly closed, full, dark containers in a cool place, away from light, heat and air.

Quality and Purity

Q. How can I check if lavender oil is pure?

A GC-MS test is the best check. Pure lavender oil has natural linalool and linalyl acetate levels and camphor below 0.5%. Added lavandin raises camphor and cineole, and added synthetic linalool or linalyl acetate changes the minor components.

Q. Which ISO standards apply to lavender oil?

ISO 3515 covers lavender oil (Lavandula angustifolia) and ISO 8902 covers lavandin Grosso oil. They set the expected ranges for density, refractive index, optical rotation and main components.

Q. Which allergens are in lavender oil?

Lavender oil naturally contains linalool, limonene and traces of geraniol and coumarin. Batch allergen values are given on request for labelling and IFRA calculations.
