Tea Tree Oil Basics

Q. What is tea tree oil?

Tea tree oil is an essential oil steam-distilled from the leaves of Melaleuca alternifolia, a tree native to Australia. It has a fresh, medicinal, slightly camphoraceous aroma and is widely used in skin care, hair care, hand wash and cleaning products.

Q. Is tea tree oil the same as melaleuca oil?

Yes. Tea tree oil is also called melaleuca oil, after its botanical name Melaleuca alternifolia.

Q. Which countries produce tea tree oil?

Australia is the largest and best-known producer. Tea tree oil is also produced in China, Kenya and South Africa.

Q. What is the main component of tea tree oil?

The main component is terpinen-4-ol, at 35% to 48% in standard oil. Tea tree oil also contains gamma-terpinene, alpha-terpinene and a small amount of 1,8-cineole.

Q. What is the difference between standard and premium tea tree oil?

Standard tea tree oil has at least 35% terpinen-4-ol and up to 10% cineole, and suits soaps, hand wash and cleaners. Premium low-cineole oil has at least 40% terpinen-4-ol and up to 5% cineole, and is preferred for face and skin care.

Q. Which tea tree oil is best?

For face care and premium skin products, choose the premium low-cineole grade. For soaps, hand wash, shampoos and cleaners, the standard grade gives better value.

Uses of Tea Tree Oil

Q. What is tea tree oil used for?

Tea tree oil is used in face washes, toners, gels and creams for oily and blemish-prone skin, shampoos and scalp care, hand wash, foot care, deodorants, surface cleaners and aromatherapy blends.

Q. Is tea tree oil good for pimples and acne-prone skin?

Tea tree oil is one of the most popular ingredients in skin care for oily and blemish-prone skin. It is used at about 0.5% to 1% in face products and up to 2% to 5% in spot products. It is a cosmetic ingredient, not a medicine.

Q. Is tea tree oil good for hair and scalp?

Tea tree oil is widely used in shampoos, scalp oils and hair tonics for a fresh, clean scalp feel, usually at 0.5% to 2%. It must be diluted and kept away from the eyes.

Q. Can tea tree oil be used in hand wash and cleaners?

Yes. Standard tea tree oil is used at about 0.5% to 1% in hand wash, body wash and surface cleaners for its fresh, clean aroma. Disinfection claims need the required approvals.

Q. What blends well with tea tree oil?

Lavender, peppermint, eucalyptus, rosemary, lemon, lemongrass, geranium and cedarwood all blend well with tea tree oil.

Safety of Tea Tree Oil

Q. Can tea tree oil be applied directly to the skin?

Tea tree oil should be diluted in a carrier oil or product base and patch tested. Undiluted oil can irritate skin, especially on the face.

Q. Why does old tea tree oil irritate skin?

When tea tree oil is exposed to air and light, it oxidises and forms compounds that are likelier to cause skin sensitivity. Keep it tightly closed and use fresh oil in skin products.

Q. Is tea tree oil safe for pets?

No. Concentrated tea tree oil can be harmful to cats and dogs. Never apply it undiluted to animals, and make pet products only after veterinary advice.

Q. Is tea tree oil safe for children and during pregnancy?

Products for young children and for use during pregnancy should only be made after expert safety advice, at very low levels.

Q. Can tea tree oil be swallowed?

No. Tea tree oil is harmful if swallowed and must be kept out of reach of children.

Q. What is the shelf life of tea tree oil and how should it be stored?

Tea tree oil keeps for about 2 years in sealed original packing. Store it in tightly closed, full, dark containers in a cool place, away from light, heat and air.

Quality and Purity

Q. How can I check if tea tree oil is pure?

A GC-MS test against ISO 4730 is the best check. Pure tea tree oil has terpinen-4-ol of 35% to 48%, gamma-terpinene of 14% to 28% and alpha-terpinene of 6% to 12%. A high p-cymene level suggests old or oxidised oil.

Q. Which ISO standard applies to tea tree oil?

ISO 4730 covers tea tree oil. It sets the expected ranges for 15 components, including terpinen-4-ol, cineole, gamma-terpinene and alpha-terpinene.

Q. Which allergens are in tea tree oil?

Tea tree oil naturally contains limonene, and oxidised oil can contain other sensitising compounds. Batch allergen values are given on request for labelling and IFRA calculations.
