What is Evening Primrose Oil?

  • Evening primrose oil, often called EPO, is a light carrier oil cold pressed from the tiny seeds of Oenothera biennis, a plant with yellow flowers that open in the evening.
  • It is one of the few natural sources of gamma-linolenic acid (GLA), a rare omega-6 fatty acid, at about 8% to 10%, along with about 70% to 77% linoleic acid.
  • It is light, absorbs quickly and is used in face serums, creams for dry skin, body lotions, hair and scalp oils, lip care and nail care.
  • Because it is rich in delicate fatty acids, it needs careful storage and an antioxidant such as vitamin E in finished products.
  • Liana Health Care supplies evening primrose oil in bulk and private-label packs from Meerut, Uttar Pradesh, with a COA with every batch.

Evening Primrose Oil – Frequently Asked Questions

Clear answers to the most searched questions about evening primrose oil: GLA, grades, uses, storage, quality and buying in bulk

Answers from the quality team at Liana Health Care Pvt. Ltd., Meerut, India, a bulk supplier, wholesaler and exporter of cold pressed and refined evening primrose oil since 2010.

Evening Primrose Oil Basics

Q. What is evening primrose oil?

Evening primrose oil, or EPO, is a light carrier oil cold pressed from the seeds of Oenothera biennis. It is one of the few natural sources of gamma-linolenic acid, GLA, and is used in skin care, hair care and supplements.

Q. Why is it called evening primrose?

The plant’s yellow flowers open in the evening and close by the next day, which gives it the name evening primrose.

Q. What is GLA in evening primrose oil?

GLA, or gamma-linolenic acid, is a rare omega-6 fatty acid. Evening primrose oil naturally contains about 8% to 10% GLA, along with about 70% to 77% linoleic acid.

Q. What is the difference between cold pressed and refined evening primrose oil?

Cold pressed evening primrose oil is golden with a mild nutty aroma and keeps its natural vitamin E. Refined oil is light yellow and almost odourless, preferred for creams and fragranced products.

Q. Is evening primrose oil a carrier oil or an essential oil?

Evening primrose oil is a carrier oil, not an essential oil. It can be used on its own on the skin or as a base for essential oils.

Uses of Evening Primrose Oil

Q. What is evening primrose oil used for?

Evening primrose oil is used in face serums, night creams, body lotions, body butters, hand creams, lip balms, cuticle oils, scalp oils and soft-gel supplements made by licensed manufacturers.

Q. Is evening primrose oil good for skin?

Evening primrose oil is a popular ingredient in serums and creams for dry, sensitive-feeling and mature-looking skin, valued for its light texture and rich fatty acids.

Q. Can evening primrose oil be used on the face?

Yes. It is light and absorbs quickly, so it suits face oils and serums, usually at 15% to 30% blended with jojoba or rosehip oil.

Q. Is evening primrose oil good for hair?

Evening primrose oil is used in scalp oils and hair serums for a nourished, soft feel, usually blended with coconut, sesame or castor oil.

Q. Is evening primrose oil used in supplements?

Yes. Evening primrose oil is widely sold in soft-gel capsules. Supplements must be made with supplement grade oil by licensed manufacturers under the applicable food laws.

Safety and Storage

Q. Is evening primrose oil safe for skin?

Evening primrose oil is generally well accepted by most skin types. Do a patch test first. Anyone taking medicines should seek medical advice before taking evening primrose oil supplements.

Q. What is the shelf life of evening primrose oil?

Evening primrose oil keeps for about 12 months in sealed original packing. It is rich in delicate fatty acids, so opened containers should be used quickly.

Q. How should evening primrose oil be stored?

Store it in tightly closed, full, dark containers below 25°C, away from light, heat and air. Add vitamin E to finished products.

Q. How do I know if evening primrose oil has gone bad?

Rancid evening primrose oil has a sharp, fishy or paint-type smell instead of a mild nutty aroma. Do not use rancid oil in skin products.

Quality and Purity

Q. How can I check if evening primrose oil is pure?

A fatty acid profile by GC confirms genuine evening primrose oil, with GLA of about 8% to 10%. Blending with cheaper oils lowers the GLA value. Low acid and peroxide values confirm fresh oil.

Q. What GLA value should good evening primrose oil have?

Good evening primrose oil has about 8% to 10% GLA. Every Liana batch comes with a COA showing the GLA value.

Q. What is the INCI name of evening primrose oil?

The INCI name is Oenothera Biennis Oil.

Buying Evening Primrose Oil in Bulk

Q. What is the price of evening primrose oil per kg?

Evening primrose oil prices depend on the grade, GLA level, crop and quantity. Contact Liana Health Care on WhatsApp for the best price per kg today.
