Formula 1: Citronella Outdoor Candle

The most popular citronella product for gardens, balconies, cafes and resorts.

Batch size: 200 g (one candle tin)

Ingredient % w/w Quantity Function
Soy wax or paraffin candle wax 92.0 % 184 g Base

Method

  1. Fix a suitable wick in the centre of the tin.
  2. Melt the wax to the temperature your wax supplier advises (usually 75–85°C).
  3. Remove from heat, add the oils and stir gently for 2 minutes.
  4. Pour at the advised pouring temperature, keep the wick centred and cure 2 to 3 days.

Formulator tips

  • Check your wax’s maximum fragrance load, usually 6% to 10%.
  • Wide outdoor tins need a thicker wick or two wicks.

Caution: Never leave a burning candle unattended. Keep away from children, pets and anything that can catch fire.

Formula 2: Outdoor Care Body Roll-on

A simple oil roll-on for arms, legs and neck during outdoor use.

Batch size: 100 ml (ten 10 ml roll-ons)

Method

  1. Weigh the carrier oil into a clean glass beaker.
  2. Add vitamin E and the essential oils and stir well.

Formulator tips

  • Use glass roll-ons, as some plastics soften with essential oils.

  3. Slowly pour the premix into the water while stirring.
  4. Add the preservative, mix for 5 minutes, rest a few hours and fill.

Formulator tips

  • Always mix oil with surfactant first. Oil added directly to water will float.
  • Dose: about 30 ml in a bucket of water.

Caution: Not for drinking. Keep out of reach of children. Germ-killing or insect claims need tested actives and registration.

Formula 5: Agarbatti and Dhoop Dipping Oil

A fresh outdoor-style perfume for dipping blank incense sticks and dhoop cones.

Formulator tips

  • More oil gives a stronger smell but slower drying.
  • Test burn a few sticks before packing a full batch.

Caution: Flammable. Work away from flames. Keep out of reach of children. Burn in a ventilated area.

Formula 6: Citronella Melt and Pour Soap

An easy fresh soap with no lye handling.

Batch size: 1 kg (about ten 100 g bars)

  3. Pour into moulds, spray with rubbing alcohol, set 2 to 4 hours and wrap at once.

Formulator tips

  • Keep total essential oil at 1.5% or below to avoid skin tingling.
  • A little yellow soap colour gives a fresh citrus look.

Caution: Keep away from eyes. Stop use if irritation occurs.

Quality Checks, Labelling and Common Mistakes

Quality checks

  • Keep one sample at 40–45°C for 2 to 4 weeks and check for changes, and retain a sample of every batch.

Labelling

  • Show product name, ingredients, net quantity, batch number, manufacturing and expiry dates, and manufacturer details.
  • Use neutral names such as "Outdoor Care" unless the product is registered.
  • Cosmetic, home care and insect repellent products need different licences or registrations in India. Check which applies before selling.

Common mistakes

  • Making mosquito protection claims without registration.
  • Using too much citronella oil in skin products.
  • Adding essential oil to water without a solubiliser or surfactant.

Start Small, Scale Up with Liana Health Care

  • Trial packs from 100 ml for R&D, bulk packs up to 200 kg for production.
  • Citronella oil plus lemongrass, eucalyptus citriodora, geranium and soap bases from one supplier.
  • White label and contract manufacturing for brands without their own factory.

Disclaimer: These formulas are starting points for education and product development, not finished commercial formulations. Formulators must carry out their own stability, safety and compatibility testing and make sure products and labels meet all applicable laws and registrations before sale. Nothing in this guide is a claim that any product will prevent insect bites or disease. Liana Health Care Pvt. Ltd. accepts no liability for products made using this information.

Citronella Oil – Frequently Asked Questions

Clear answers to the most searched questions about citronella oil: grades, uses, safety, purity, storage and buying in bulk

Answers from the quality team at Liana Health Care Pvt. Ltd., Meerut, India, a manufacturer, bulk supplier and exporter of Java citronella oil since 2010.

Citronella Oil Basics

Q. What is citronella oil?

Citronella oil is an essential oil steam-distilled from the leaves of citronella grass, mainly Cymbopogon winterianus (Java type). It has a fresh, lemony, grassy aroma and is used in outdoor care products, candles, incense, soaps, floor cleaners and as a source of aroma chemicals.

Q. What is the difference between Java and Ceylon citronella oil?

Java citronella oil (Cymbopogon winterianus) is rich in citronellal and geraniol, with a sweet, lemony aroma, and is the most traded type. Ceylon citronella oil (Cymbopogon nardus) is woodier and sharper, with lower citronellal.

Q. What are the main components of citronella oil?

Java citronella oil is rich in citronellal (about 32% to 45%), geraniol and citronellol, with smaller amounts of geranyl acetate, limonene and elemol.

Q. What do total aldehydes and total alcohols mean in citronella oil?

These are the two main quality values. Standard Java citronella oil has at least 35% total aldehydes, counted as citronellal, and at least 85% total alcohols, counted as geraniol.

Q. Which citronella oil grade is best?

The standard Java grade gives the best value for outdoor care products, candles, soaps and cleaners. The high citronellal grade suits premium products and aroma chemical production.

Uses of Citronella Oil

Q. What is citronella oil used for?

Citronella oil is used in outdoor care products, citronella candles, incense sticks and dhoop, soaps, floor cleaners, phenyl, room sprays, pet-area fresheners and as a raw material for citronellal and hydroxycitronellal.

Q. Does citronella oil repel mosquitoes?

Citronella oil is the best-known oil in outdoor care products, candles and sprays for its strong fresh aroma. In India, a product can only be sold as an insect repellent after registration with CIB&RC.

Q. Are citronella candles effective?

Citronella candles are very popular for gardens, balconies and outdoor seating for their fresh aroma. Insect-repellent claims on candles also need registration in India.

Q. Can citronella oil be used in soaps and floor cleaners?

Yes. Citronella oil is widely used at about 1% in soaps, because its fresh aroma holds well and the oil is economical. Floor cleaners and phenyl use 0.5% to 1%.

Q. What blends well with citronella oil?

Lemongrass, eucalyptus citriodora, eucalyptus, cedarwood, geranium, tea tree, lavender and peppermint all blend well with citronella oil.

Safety of Citronella Oil

Q. Can citronella oil be applied directly to the skin?

No. Citronella oil should be diluted in a carrier oil or product base, kept at low levels in leave-on products, and patch tested. It contains natural allergens such as citronellol and geraniol.

Q. Is citronella oil safe for children and pets?

Products for young children should only be made after expert safety advice, at very low levels. Keep concentrated citronella oil away from pets, and make pet products only after veterinary advice.

Q. Can citronella oil be swallowed?

No. Citronella oil may be harmful if swallowed and must be kept out of reach of children.

Q. What is the shelf life of citronella oil and how should it be stored?

Citronella oil keeps for about 2 years in sealed original packing. Store it in tightly closed, full, dark containers in a cool place, away from heat, light and air.

Quality and Purity

Q. How can I check if citronella oil is pure?

A GC test is the best check. It confirms the citronellal, geraniol and citronellol levels, and reveals added synthetic aroma chemicals, cheaper oils or solvents.

Q. Which ISO standards apply to citronella oil?

ISO 3848 covers Java citronella oil and ISO 3849 covers Ceylon citronella oil. They set the expected density, refractive index and total aldehyde and alcohol values.

Q. Which allergens are in citronella oil?

Citronella oil naturally contains citronellol, geraniol, limonene, linalool and eugenol in small amounts. Batch allergen values are given on request for labelling and IFRA calculations.

Buying Citronella Oil in Bulk

Q. What is the price of citronella oil per kg?

Citronella oil prices depend on the grade, crop, season and quantity. As a manufacturer, Liana Health Care offers the best price per kg for citronella oil. Contact us on WhatsApp for today’s price.
