What is Flaxseed Oil?

  • Flaxseed oil, also called linseed oil or alsi oil, is pressed from the seeds of the flax plant, Linum usitatissimum.
  • It is one of the richest plant sources of alpha-linolenic acid, an omega-3 fatty acid, which usually makes up about half of the oil.
  • Cold pressed flaxseed oil is used in food, nutrition products, skin care and hair care. Refined linseed oil is used in wood finishes, paints, varnishes, inks and putty.
  • Because it is rich in omega-3, flaxseed oil is sensitive to heat, light and air. It must be stored cool and dark and used fresh.
  • Liana Health Care cold presses flaxseed oil at its 9,000 sq ft GMP-certified facility in Meerut, and supplies it in bulk and private-label packs with a COA with every batch.

Flaxseed Oil (Linseed Oil) – Frequently Asked Questions

Clear answers to the most searched questions about flaxseed oil: grades, uses, storage, quality and buying in bulk

Answers from the quality team at Liana Health Care Pvt. Ltd., Meerut, India, a manufacturer, bulk supplier and exporter of cold pressed flaxseed oil and refined linseed oil since 2010.

Flaxseed Oil Basics

Q. What is flaxseed oil?

Flaxseed oil is pressed from the seeds of the flax plant, Linum usitatissimum. It is a golden oil rich in alpha-linolenic acid, an omega-3 fatty acid, used in food, skin care, hair care and wood finishing.

Q. Is flaxseed oil the same as linseed oil?

Yes. Both come from flax seeds. Flaxseed oil usually means the cold pressed food or cosmetic grade, while linseed oil usually means the industrial grade used in wood finishes and paints.

Q. What is alsi oil?

Alsi is the Hindi name for flax seed, so alsi oil is flaxseed oil.

Q. How much omega-3 is in flaxseed oil?

Alpha-linolenic acid, an omega-3 fatty acid, typically makes up 45% to 60% of flaxseed oil.

Q. What is the difference between cold pressed and refined flaxseed oil?

Cold pressed flaxseed oil is pressed without heat and keeps its natural aroma and minor components, for food and cosmetics. Refined linseed oil is processed for industrial uses such as wood finishes and paints.

Uses of Flaxseed Oil

Q. What is flaxseed oil used for?

Flaxseed oil is used in salad dressings and health-food products, face oils, creams, body butters, hair oils, massage oils, wood finishing oils, paints, varnishes and printing inks.

Q. Is flaxseed oil good for skin?

Flaxseed oil is used in face oils, lotions and body butters for a soft, nourishing feel. Do a patch test first.

Q. Is flaxseed oil good for hair?

Flaxseed oil is used in hair oils and serums, often blended with coconut or sesame oil, for soft, smooth-feeling hair.

Q. Can flaxseed oil be used for cooking?

Food grade flaxseed oil is best used cold, in dressings, dips and over cooked food. It is not suited to frying because heat damages its omega-3 fatty acids.

Q. Why is linseed oil used on wood?

Linseed oil is a drying oil. It reacts with air to form a hard, protective film that brings out the grain of the wood.

Safety and Storage

Q. Why do linseed oil rags catch fire?

As linseed oil dries, it reacts with air and gives off heat. In a pile of rags this heat can build up and cause a fire. Spread rags flat to dry outdoors or soak them in water before disposal.

Q. What is the shelf life of flaxseed oil?

Flaxseed oil keeps for about 6 to 12 months in sealed packing, stored cool and dark. Use soon after opening.

Q. How should flaxseed oil be stored?

Store flaxseed oil in tightly closed, dark containers in a cool place. Cold storage is best for food and cosmetic grades.

Q. How do I know if flaxseed oil has gone rancid?

Fresh flaxseed oil smells mild and nutty. A sharp, bitter, fishy or paint-type smell means it has oxidised and should not be used.

Quality and Purity

Q. How can I check if flaxseed oil is pure?

Pure flaxseed oil has a high iodine value of about 170 to 204, with 45% to 60% alpha-linolenic acid. The COA and a GC fatty acid report confirm purity.

Q. What is the INCI name of flaxseed oil?

The INCI name is Linum Usitatissimum Seed Oil.

Q. Is flaxseed oil food grade?

Liana Health Care supplies food grade cold pressed flaxseed oil under FSSAI and local food laws. Industrial linseed oil is not for food use.

Buying Flaxseed Oil in Bulk

Q. What is the price of flaxseed oil per kg?

Flaxseed oil prices depend on the grade, seed crop and quantity. Contact Liana Health Care on WhatsApp for the best price per kg today.

Q. What is the MOQ and packing for flaxseed oil?

Liana Health Care supplies flaxseed oil from 100 ml trial packs up to 200 kg drums, in amber glass or PET bottles, HDPE cans and drums. MOQ is flexible.

Q. Do you provide COA, MSDS and samples for flaxseed oil?

Yes. A COA with acid, peroxide and iodine values comes with every batch. MSDS and samples are available on request.

Q. Can you supply private label flaxseed oil and export it?

Yes. Liana Health Care manufactures flaxseed oil in Meerut, offers white label and contract manufacturing, and supplies buyers across India and for export.
