What Is Hemp Seed Oil?

  • A light, fast-absorbing carrier oil pressed from hemp seeds.
  • Rich in omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids in a natural balance of about 3:1.
  • Contains a small amount of GLA (gamma-linolenic acid), uncommon in most carrier oils.
  • Traditionally valued for nourishing dry skin, scalp and hair.
  • Hemp seed oil is not CBD oil – it is pressed from seeds, not from leaves or flowers.

Typical Fatty Acid Profile

Fatty Acid Typical Range (%)
Linoleic Acid (Omega-6, C18:2) 50 – 60
Alpha-Linolenic Acid (Omega-3, C18:3) 15 – 25
Oleic Acid (Omega-9, C18:1) 9 – 16
Palmitic Acid (C16:0) 5 – 7

Hemp Seed Oil – Uses, Applications & Formulation Guide for Formulators

PICTURE 1 – Hemp seed oil with cosmetic products: serum bottle, cream jar, soap bar (real photo) – 1200 × 600 px

  • Recommended usage levels for each product type.
  • Eight starter formulations with method and tips for cosmetic formulators and private-label brands.

Why Formulators Choose Hemp Seed Oil

  • Light, dry-feel oil: absorbs quickly and leaves little greasy residue – suits face oils, serums and lightweight lotions.
  • High in essential fatty acids: around 70–80% linoleic and alpha-linolenic acid, in a natural omega-6 : omega-3 balance of about 3:1.
  • Contains GLA: a small amount of gamma-linolenic acid, which few carrier oils offer.
  • Low comedogenic reputation: widely used in products for oily and combination skin.
  • Natural green colour (virgin grade): useful as a natural tint in green-themed and botanical products.
  • Strong label appeal: "hemp" is a popular ingredient name in natural and clean-beauty ranges.
  • Note: hemp seed oil is pressed from seeds – it is not CBD oil and should not be marketed as one.

  • Formula 3: Hemp Hair & Scalp Oil
  • Formula 4: Hemp Beard Oil
  • Formula 5: Hemp Lip Balm
  • Formula 6: Hemp Cold Process Soap (Oil Blend)
  • Formula 7: Hemp Massage Oil
  • Formula 8: Whipped Hemp Body Butter

All formulas are in % w/w (by weight). Scale them up by multiplying each percentage by your batch size.

Formula 1: Hemp Face Oil (Lightweight Serum)

Phase Ingredient % w/w
A Hemp Seed Oil 50.0
A Jojoba Oil 25.0
A Argan Oil 13.5
A Caprylic / Capric Triglyceride 10.0
B Vitamin E (Tocopherol) 1.0
B Lavender Essential Oil 0.5
  Total 100.0

Method

  • Weigh Phase A oils into a clean, dry vessel and stir gently at room temperature.
  • Add Phase B and mix until uniform.
  • Fill into amber glass dropper bottles or airless pumps; flush headspace with nitrogen if possible.

Formulator tip: No heat is needed. Use refined hemp oil if you want a pale colour and low odour.

Formula 2: Hemp Daily Body Lotion (Oil-in-Water)

Phase Ingredient % w/w
A DM / Purified Water 78.0
A Glycerin 3.0
A Xanthan Gum 0.2
B Hemp Seed Oil 8.0
B Shea Butter 3.0
B Cetearyl Alcohol 2.0
B Emulsifier (e.g. Cetearyl Olivate & Sorbitan Olivate) 4.0
C Vitamin E (Tocopherol) 0.5
C Broad-Spectrum Preservative 1.0
C Fragrance / Essential Oil 0.3
  Total 100.0

Method

  • Disperse xanthan gum in glycerin, add water and heat Phase A to 70–75°C.
  • Heat Phase B to 70–75°C until melted.
  • Add B to A while homogenising for 2–3 minutes.
  • Cool with gentle stirring; below 40°C add Phase C.
  • Adjust pH to about 5.0–5.5 if required and fill.

Formulator tip: Keep the time hemp oil spends at high temperature short. Preservative level and pH should follow your preservative supplier's guidance.

Formula 3: Hemp Hair & Scalp Oil

Phase Ingredient % w/w
A Hemp Seed Oil 40.0
A Fractionated Coconut Oil 30.0
A Castor Oil 15.0
A Sweet Almond Oil 13.5

  Total 100.0

Method

  • Mix Phase A oils at room temperature.
  • Add Phase B and stir well.
  • Fill into PET or amber bottles with a flip-top or dropper.

Formulator tip: Castor oil adds thickness and shine; reduce it for a lighter oil. Fractionated coconut oil keeps the blend liquid in winter.

Formula 4: Hemp Beard Oil

Phase Ingredient % w/w
A Hemp Seed Oil 40.0
A Jojoba Oil 30.0
A Argan Oil 18.0
A Grapeseed Oil 10.0

A Shea Butter 20.0
A Cocoa Butter 15.0
A Coconut Oil 14.0
B Hemp Seed Oil 25.0
C Vitamin E (Tocopherol) 0.5
C Lip-Safe Flavour 0.5
  Total 100.0

Method

  • Melt Phase A at about 70°C until clear.
  • Remove from heat, add Phase B and stir.
  • Add Phase C when slightly cooled and pour into tubes or tins.
  • Let set at room temperature before capping.

Formulator tip: Adding hemp oil after melting the waxes limits heat exposure. Increase beeswax for a firmer stick in hot climates.

Formula 6: Hemp Cold Process Soap (Oil Blend)

Phase Ingredient % w/w
Oils Olive Oil (Pomace) 35.0
Oils Coconut Oil 25.0
Oils Shea Butter 15.0
Oils Hemp Seed Oil 15.0
Oils Cocoa Butter 5.0
Oils Castor Oil 5.0
  Total 100.0

Method

  • Percentages are of total oils. Calculate sodium hydroxide and water with a soap calculator, at about 5% superfat.
  • Prepare the lye solution with full safety gear and let it cool.
  • Combine lye and oils at 35–45°C and blend to light trace.
  • Add fragrance or essential oil (about 3% of oils), pour into moulds and cure for 4–6 weeks.

Formulator tip: Keep hemp oil at 15% or less of total oils – higher amounts can make bars soft and prone to orange spots (rancidity). Add 0.1% rosemary oleoresin to the oils for extra protection.

Formula 7: Hemp Massage Oil

Phase Ingredient % w/w
A Sweet Almond Oil 50.0
A Hemp Seed Oil 30.0
A Grapeseed Oil 18.0
B Essential Oil Blend 1.5
B Vitamin E (Tocopherol) 0.5
  Total 100.0

Method

  • Mix Phase A oils.
  • Add Phase B and stir well.
  • Fill into PET or glass bottles with a pump.

Formulator tip: Grapeseed oil gives good glide. For sensitive skin, reduce essential oils to 0.5–1%.

Formula 8: Whipped Hemp Body Butter

Phase Ingredient % w/w
A Shea Butter 50.0
A Mango Butter 15.0
A Coconut Oil 13.5
B Hemp Seed Oil 20.0
C Vitamin E (Tocopherol) 0.5
C Fragrance / Essential Oil 1.0
  Total 100.0

Method

  • Gently melt Phase A at low heat.
  • Remove from heat and stir in Phase B.
  • Chill until just firm at the edges, then whip for 5–10 minutes until fluffy.
  • Add Phase C during whipping and fill into jars.

Formulator tip: Shea butter can turn grainy if cooled slowly; cool quickly in the fridge before whipping.

Formulation Tips for Hemp Seed Oil

PICTURE 3 – Formulator weighing oils on a lab balance (real photo) – 800 × 500 px
  • Protect from oxidation: hemp oil is rich in omega-3, so add Vitamin E (0.2–0.5%) and/or rosemary oleoresin (0.1–0.2%) to the oil phase.
  • Limit heat: add hemp oil as late as possible and keep heating time short; for anhydrous blends, no heat is needed.
  • Choose the right grade: virgin grade gives a green tint and nutty smell; refined grade suits white creams and fragranced products.
  • Mask the odour: virgin hemp has a natural earthy smell – citrus, mint, lavender and woody essential oils blend well with it.
  • Blend for stability: pairing with stable oils such as jojoba, fractionated coconut or squalane improves shelf life.
  • Use protective packaging: amber glass, opaque bottles or airless pumps, filled well to reduce air in the pack.
  • Preserve water-based products: any formula containing water needs a broad-spectrum preservative.
  • Test before launch: run stability tests (heat, cold and light), check smell and colour over time, and do preservative efficacy testing for emulsions.
  • Check regulations: follow cosmetic rules in your selling market and avoid medical claims on labels.
