Kalonji Oil Uses and Starter Formulations for Startups and Learners

Use levels, choosing the grade and 6 practical formulas for hair, skin, beard, soap and massage products

• Startups and small brands planning hair oils, serums, beard oils, soaps or massage oils with kalonji oil.
• Students and learners in cosmetics, Ayurveda and Unani product making.
• Small manufacturers testing products at 100 g to 1 kg scale before bulk production.
• All formulas are given in % w/w and grams, so they scale up easily. 1% = 1 g in a 100 g batch.

Always weigh oils in grams, add vitamin E, avoid heating kalonji oil above 60°C, store in dark bottles and patch test skin products. Its strong natural smell blends best with milder oils and a little essential oil.

A classic herbal hair oil, the most popular kalonji product in India.

Batch size: 100 ml

Method

1. Warm coconut oil slightly if solid and weigh all carrier oils into a beaker.
2. Add vitamin E and rosemary oil and stir well.
3. Rest for 1 hour, then fill into PET or HDPE hair oil bottles.

Formulator tips

• Massage into the scalp, leave for 1 hour or overnight, then wash.
• Replace part of the sesame oil with amla or bhringraj oil for an Ayurvedic version.

A fast-selling combination in the Indian hair oil market.

Batch size: 100 ml

Method

1. Mix all carrier oils in a beaker.
2. Add onion extract, vitamin E and rosemary oil and stir well.
3. Rest for 24 hours, check for clarity and fill.

Formulator tips

• Rosemary oil helps balance the strong onion smell.
• Use an amber or opaque bottle to protect the oil from light.

A lightweight face oil for premium skin care brands.

Batch size: 30 ml (about 1 x 30 ml bottle)

Method

1. Weigh jojoba, argan, kalonji oil and squalane into a clean glass beaker.
2. Add vitamin E and lavender oil and mix gently.
3. Fill into an amber glass dropper bottle.

Formulator tips

• Use 3 to 4 drops on clean, damp skin at night.
• Use the filtered grade for a lighter colour and milder smell.

Caution: Patch test before use. Avoid eyes. Stop use if irritation occurs.

A simple, high-margin product for men’s grooming brands.

Batch size: 100 ml

Method

1. Weigh all carrier oils into a beaker.
2. Add vitamin E and cedarwood oil and stir well.
3. Fill into 30 ml amber glass dropper bottles.

Formulator tips

• Apply 4 to 6 drops to the beard and skin underneath, then comb through.
• Swap cedarwood for sandalwood or vetiver for a premium variant.

Caution: Patch test before use. Avoid eyes.

An easy herbal soap with no lye handling.

Batch size: 1 kg (about ten 100 g bars)

Method

1. Cut the soap base into cubes and melt at 60–65°C. Do not boil.
2. Cool to about 55°C, add kalonji oil, crushed seeds and tea tree oil and stir gently.
3. Pour into moulds and spray the surface with rubbing alcohol to remove bubbles.
4. Leave 2 to 4 hours, demould and wrap at once in shrink film.

Formulator tips

• Stir while it thickens slightly so the seeds stay spread through the bar.
• Do not exceed about 3% oil, or the bar may feel oily.

Caution: Keep away from eyes. Stop use if irritation occurs.

A warming massage oil for wellness, spa and Ayurvedic brands.

Batch size: 100 ml

Method

1. Weigh sesame and kalonji oil into a beaker.
2. Add vitamin E and the essential oils and stir well.
3. Fill into amber PET bottles with a flip cap.

Formulator tips

• Warm the bottle in hot water before massage for a more comforting feel.
• Use cold pressed sesame oil for a traditional Ayurvedic profile.

Caution: For adults. Do not apply on broken skin. Avoid eyes.

Quality checks

• Keep one sample at 40–45°C for 2 to 4 weeks and check for changes, and retain a sample of every batch.

Labelling

• Show product name, ingredients, net quantity, batch number, manufacturing and expiry dates, and manufacturer details.
• Add "For external use only" and "Patch test before use".
• Cosmetic, Ayurvedic and food products need different licences in India. Check which applies, or launch through contract manufacturing.

Common mistakes

• Heating kalonji oil too much, which damages it and darkens the colour.
• Using the strong virgin grade in face products.
• Making medical claims on labels.

• Trial packs from 100 ml for R&D, bulk packs up to 200 kg for production.
• Kalonji oil plus coconut, castor, sesame, argan, jojoba and essential oils from one supplier.
• White label and contract manufacturing for brands without their own factory.
