Frequently Asked Questions

Q. Is basil oil the same as Tulsi oil?

No. Basil oil comes from sweet basil (Ocimum basilicum). Tulsi oil comes from holy basil (Ocimum sanctum) and is rich in eugenol, with a clove-like aroma.

Q. Which basil oil type should I buy for skin and hair care?

The linalool type is preferred for skin care, hair care and aromatherapy. The methyl chavicol type suits flavours, soaps and room fresheners.

Q. Why should methyl chavicol type be kept low in skin products?

Methyl chavicol (estragole) is restricted in some markets for leave-on products. Using the linalool type, or low levels, keeps formulations within common safety guidance.

Q. What is the minimum order quantity?

We supply from 100 ml packs up to 200 kg drums. MOQ is flexible. Contact us with your quantity.

Q. Do you provide COA, MSDS and samples?

Yes. COA comes with every batch. MSDS, GC-MS report and samples are available on request.

Basil oil is an essential oil steam-distilled from the leaves and flowering tops of sweet basil, Ocimum basilicum. It has a sweet, fresh, herbal aroma and is used in perfumery, soaps, hair care, room fresheners, aromatherapy and flavours.

Q. What is basil called in Hindi?

Sweet basil is called Babui Tulsi or Sabja in Hindi. It is a different plant from holy basil (Tulsi).

Q. Is basil oil the same as tulsi oil?

No. Basil oil comes from sweet basil (Ocimum basilicum). Tulsi oil comes from holy basil (Ocimum tenuiflorum), which is rich in eugenol and has a spicier aroma with a clove note.

Q. What is the difference between linalool type and methyl chavicol type basil oil?

Linalool type, or sweet basil oil, is soft, sweet and floral-herbal, preferred for skin care and fine fragrance. Methyl chavicol type is sweeter with an anise note and is widely used in flavours, soaps and fresheners.

Q. What are the main components of basil oil?

Linalool type basil oil is rich in linalool, with some 1,8-cineole and eugenol. Methyl chavicol type is rich in methyl chavicol, also called estragole.

Q. Which basil oil grade is best?

Linalool type is best for skin care, aromatherapy and fine fragrance. Methyl chavicol type gives better value for soaps, room fresheners and flavours.

Uses of Basil Oil

Q. What is basil oil used for?

Basil oil is used in perfumes, soaps, shampoos and hair oils, room fresheners, diffuser blends, massage oils and food and beverage flavours.

Q. Is basil oil good for hair?

Basil oil is added to hair oils and shampoos for its fresh herbal aroma, usually at 0.5% to 1%, diluted in a carrier oil such as coconut or sesame oil.

Q. Is basil oil good for focus and freshness?

Basil oil is a popular aroma in fresh, focus-style diffuser blends with rosemary, peppermint and lemon. These are aroma products, not medicines.

Q. Is basil oil used in food?

Yes. Flavour grade basil oil is used in sauces, seasonings, beverages and confectionery. Food use needs flavour grade oil and the required food licences.

Q. What blends well with basil oil?

Lavender, bergamot FCF, lemon, sweet orange, rosemary, peppermint, geranium, cedarwood and clary sage all blend well with basil oil.

Safety of Basil Oil

Q. Can basil oil be applied directly to the skin?

No. Basil oil should be diluted in a carrier oil or product base, kept at low levels in leave-on products, and patch tested.

Q. Is methyl chavicol type basil oil safe?

Methyl chavicol (estragole) is restricted in some markets for skin and food products. Linalool type basil oil, which is low in methyl chavicol, is preferred for leave-on skin care. Check the rules of your target market.

Q. Is basil oil safe for children and during pregnancy?

Products for young children and for use during pregnancy should only be made after expert safety advice, at very low levels.

Q. Can basil oil be swallowed?

No. Concentrated basil oil should not be swallowed. Only flavour grade oil may be used in food, at approved levels, by licensed food manufacturers.

Q. What is the shelf life of basil oil and how should it be stored?

Basil oil keeps for about 2 years in sealed original packing. Store it in tightly closed, full, dark containers in a cool place, away from heat, light and air.

Quality and Purity

Q. How can I check if basil oil is pure?

A GC test is the best check. It confirms the type through the linalool and methyl chavicol levels, and reveals any added synthetic linalool or other oils.

Q. Which ISO standard applies to basil oil?

ISO 11043 covers methyl chavicol type basil oil. Linalool type basil oil is tested against in-house specifications based on its typical GC profile.

Q. Which allergens are in basil oil?

Basil oil naturally contains linalool, eugenol, limonene and geraniol in varying amounts. Batch allergen values are given on request for labelling and IFRA calculations.
