What is Bergamot Oil?

  • Bergamot oil is a citrus essential oil cold-pressed from the peel of Citrus bergamia, a small green-yellow citrus fruit grown mainly in Calabria, southern Italy.
  • It is rich in linalyl acetate, limonene and linalool, which give its fresh, sweet, citrus-floral aroma.
  • It is one of the most important oils in perfumery, used in colognes, chypre and fresh fragrances, and is the classic flavour note of Earl Grey tea.
  • Natural bergamot oil contains bergapten, which can make skin sensitive to sunlight. The FCF (bergapten-free) grade is preferred for skin products.
  • Liana Health Care supplies it in bulk and private-label packs from Meerut, Uttar Pradesh, with a COA with every batch.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q. What is the difference between natural and FCF bergamot oil?

Natural bergamot oil contains bergapten, which can make skin sensitive to sunlight. FCF bergamot has the bergapten removed, so it is preferred for leave-on skin products.

Q. Which grade should I buy for perfumes and candles?

Natural bergamot oil is usually preferred for perfumery, soaps, candles and diffusers because of its fuller aroma. FCF is preferred for lotions, body oils and roll-ons.

Q. Is bergamot oil the same as bergamot (bee balm) herb oil?

No. Bergamot oil comes from the peel of the Citrus bergamia fruit. Bee balm, sometimes called wild bergamot, is a different plant.

Q. What is the minimum order quantity?

We supply from 100 ml packs up to 200 kg drums. MOQ is flexible. Contact us with your quantity.

Q. Do you provide COA, MSDS and samples?

Yes. COA comes with every batch. MSDS, GC-MS report and samples are available on request.

Bergamot Oil Uses and Starter Formulations for Startups and Learners

Use levels, choosing the grade and 6 practical formulas for roll-on, body lotion, soap, reed diffuser, room spray and fragrance blend

Who This Guide Is For

IMAGE 4
1200 x 400 px
Bergamot oil with roll-on, lotion, reed diffuser and soap products
  • Startups and small brands planning roll-ons, body lotions, soaps, reed diffusers or room sprays with bergamot oil.
  • Students and learners in perfumery, aromatherapy, home fragrance and personal care.
  • Small manufacturers testing products at 100 g to 1 kg scale before bulk production.
  • Why bergamot: a fresh, elegant citrus-floral aroma that gives products a premium, luxury feel.
  • All formulas are given in % w/w and grams, so they scale up easily. 1% = 1 g in a 100 g batch.

Bergamot Oil Use Levels and Grade Guide

Product type Suggested bergamot oil Best grade
Roll-on / body oil (leave-on) 1% – 3% FCF only
Lotion / cream (leave-on) 0.5% – 1% FCF only
Soap / body wash (rinse-off) 1% – 1.5% Natural or FCF
Reed diffuser 8% – 15% Natural
Room / linen spray 1% – 1.5% Natural
Candles Within wax fragrance load Natural
Diffuser blend Up to 100% Natural

Natural bergamot can make skin sensitive to sunlight, so always use the FCF grade in leave-on skin products and follow IFRA limits. Citrus oils oxidise quickly, so use fresh oil, add vitamin E to oil products and store in dark bottles.

Formula 1: Calm and Uplift Pulse-Point Roll-on

A ready-to-use aromatherapy roll-on for wrists, neck and temples.

Batch size: 100 ml (ten 10 ml roll-ons)

Ingredient % w/w Quantity Function
Fractionated coconut oil 95.5 % 95.5 g Carrier
Bergamot oil FCF 2.5 % 2.5 g Key oil
Lavender oil 1.5 % 1.5 g Calming aroma
Vitamin E (tocopherol) 0.5 % 0.5 g Antioxidant

Method

  1. Weigh the carrier oil into a clean glass beaker.
  2. Add vitamin E and the essential oils and stir well.
  3. Fill into 10 ml glass roll-on bottles and cap tightly.

Formulator tips

  • Add 0.5% cedarwood oil for a warmer, longer-lasting blend.
  • Use FCF bergamot only, as this product stays on the skin.

Caution: Avoid eyes. Patch test before regular use. Not for children under 6 years.

Formula 2: Bergamot Body Lotion

A light, luxurious lotion and a good first emulsion for learners.

Batch size: 100 g

Ingredient % w/w Quantity Function
DM / RO water 76.8 % 76.8 g Water phase
Sweet almond oil 6.0 % 6.0 g Oil phase
Emulsifying wax (NF type) 5.0 % 5.0 g Emulsifier
Glycerin 4.0 % 4.0 g Moisturiser
Shea butter 4.0 % 4.0 g Softness
Cetyl alcohol 2.0 % 2.0 g Thickener
Bergamot oil FCF 1.0 % 1.0 g Key oil
Preservative (as per supplier dose) 0.7 % 0.7 g Shelf life
Vitamin E (tocopherol) 0.5 % 0.5 g Antioxidant

Method

  1. Heat water and glycerin to 75°C in one beaker.
  2. Heat almond oil, emulsifying wax, shea butter and cetyl alcohol to 75°C in another.
  3. Pour the oil phase into the water phase while mixing with a hand blender for 2 to 3 minutes.
  4. Below 40°C, add bergamot oil, vitamin E and preservative and mix well.
  5. Check pH (5.5 to 6.5) and fill into bottles or tubes.

Formulator tips

  • Both phases must be at the same temperature, or the lotion can separate.
  • For a thicker cream, raise cetyl alcohol to 3%.

Caution: Use FCF bergamot only. Patch test before use. Avoid eyes.

Formula 3: Bergamot Luxury Melt and Pour Soap

An easy premium soap with no lye handling.

Batch size: 1 kg (about ten 100 g bars)

Ingredient % w/w Quantity Function
Melt and pour soap base (shea or goat milk) 98.5 % 985 g Base
Bergamot oil 1.2 % 12 g Key oil
Lavender oil 0.3 % 3 g Soft floral note

Method

  1. Cut the soap base into cubes and melt at 60–65°C. Do not boil.
  2. Cool to about 55°C, add the oils and stir gently.
  3. Pour into moulds, spray with rubbing alcohol, set 2 to 4 hours and wrap at once.

Formulator tips

  • A little yellow or green soap colour gives a citrus look.
  • Citrus scent fades faster in soap, so wrap bars at once.

Caution: Keep away from eyes. Stop use if irritation occurs.

Formula 4: Bergamot Reed Diffuser

A popular gift and home fragrance product with good margins.

Batch size: 100 ml (one 100 ml diffuser)

  2. Add the oils and stir until clear.
  3. Rest for 24 hours, fill into a glass bottle and add 6 to 8 reed sticks.

Formulator tips

  • Flip the reeds every few days to refresh the scent.
  • Use fibre reeds for faster scent throw.

Caution: Keep out of reach of children and pets. Do not drink. Keep away from polished wood surfaces.

Formula 5: Bergamot Room and Linen Spray

A fresh, elegant spray for rooms, linen and cars.

Batch size: 100 ml

Ingredient % w/w Quantity Function
DM / RO water 94.5 % 94.5 g Base
Polysorbate 20 (solubiliser) 3.0 % 3.0 g Mixes oil into water
Bergamot oil 1.5 % 1.5 g Main aroma
Lavender oil 0.5 % 0.5 g Soft note
Preservative (as per supplier dose) 0.5 % 0.5 g Shelf life

Method

  1. Mix Polysorbate 20 with the oils until clear.
  2. Slowly add the water while stirring.
  3. Add the preservative and fill into fine-mist spray bottles.

Formulator tips

  • If cloudy, raise Polysorbate 20 to 4% and reduce water.
  • Label: "Shake well before use".

Caution: Do not spray on the face, eyes or pets. Test on a hidden area of fabric first.

Formula 6: Bergamot Citrus Fragrance Blend (for Soaps and Candles)

A ready fragrance blend that learners can use in soaps, candles and room products.

Batch size: 100 g of blend

Ingredient % w/w Quantity Function
Bergamot oil 40.0 % 40.0 g Fresh citrus-floral top
Orange oil 20.0 % 20.0 g Sweet citrus
Lavender oil 20.0 % 20.0 g Floral heart
Rosemary oil 10.0 % 10.0 g Herbal lift
Cedarwood oil 10.0 % 10.0 g Woody base

Method

  1. Mix all oils in a glass beaker.
  2. Rest for 2 to 3 days so the blend rounds off.
  3. Use at 1% to 1.5% in soaps and within your wax fragrance load (usually 6% to 8%) in candles.

Formulator tips

  • Smell the blend on a paper strip at 1 hour and 24 hours to judge the notes.
  • Store in a full, closed amber bottle.

Caution: Concentrated blend. Not for direct skin use. Keep out of reach of children.

Quality Checks, Labelling and Common Mistakes

Quality checks

  • Keep one sample at 40–45°C for 2 to 4 weeks and check for changes, and retain a sample of every batch.

Labelling

  • Show product name, ingredients, net quantity, batch number, manufacturing and expiry dates, and manufacturer details.
  • List allergens such as limonene and linalool where required.
  • For any product made with natural bergamot that stays on skin, add a sun caution, or better, switch to the FCF grade.

Common mistakes

  • Using natural bergamot in leave-on skin products.
  • Storing citrus oil in half-empty or clear bottles, which speeds up oxidation.
  • Adding essential oil to water without a solubiliser.

Start Small, Scale Up with Liana Health Care

  • Trial packs from 100 ml for R&D, bulk packs up to 200 kg for production.
  • Bergamot oil plus orange, lemon, lavender, cedarwood and soap bases from one supplier.

Bergamot oil is an essential oil cold pressed from the peel of the bergamot orange, Citrus bergamia, grown mainly in Calabria, Italy. It has a fresh, sweet, citrus-floral aroma and is one of the most important top notes in perfumery.

Q. What is bergamot FCF oil?

Bergamot FCF is bergamot oil with the furocoumarins, mainly bergapten, removed. FCF stands for furocoumarin-free. It is preferred for leave-on skin products because natural bergamot oil can cause skin reactions in sunlight.

Q. What is the difference between natural and FCF bergamot oil?

Natural cold pressed bergamot oil has the full, rich citrus-floral aroma and is used in perfumes, soaps and rinse-off products. Bergamot FCF has almost the same aroma but is safe for leave-on skin products within normal use levels.

Q. What are the main components of bergamot oil?

Bergamot oil is rich in limonene, linalyl acetate and linalool, which give its fresh, floral citrus character. Natural bergamot oil also contains small amounts of bergapten.

Q. Is bergamot the flavour in Earl Grey tea?

Yes. Bergamot oil gives Earl Grey tea its classic citrus-floral flavour. Food use needs flavour grade oil and the required food licences.

Uses of Bergamot Oil

Q. What is bergamot oil used for?

Bergamot oil is used in perfumes and colognes, soaps, body wash, lotions, roll-on perfumes, candles, room sprays, diffuser blends and tea and food flavours.

Q. Is bergamot oil good for skin?

Bergamot FCF is used in lotions, body oils and roll-on perfumes for its fresh citrus-floral aroma, usually at 0.5% to 1%. Natural bergamot oil should only be used in rinse-off products or within IFRA limits.

Q. Is bergamot oil relaxing?

Bergamot is a popular aroma in relaxing and uplifting diffuser blends with lavender and frankincense. These are aroma products, not medicines.

Q. Why is bergamot oil important in perfumery?

Bergamot gives a fresh, elegant top note that blends with almost every fragrance family. It is a key note in classic colognes, chypre and fougere perfumes.

Q. What blends well with bergamot oil?

Lavender, neroli, geranium, ylang ylang, frankincense, cedarwood, sandalwood, vetiver, patchouli and lemon all blend well with bergamot oil.

Safety of Bergamot Oil

Q. Is bergamot oil safe in sunlight?

Natural bergamot oil contains bergapten, which can cause skin reactions and dark marks when skin is exposed to sunlight. Use bergamot FCF in leave-on skin products, or keep natural oil within IFRA limits.

Q. Can bergamot oil be applied directly to the skin?

No. Bergamot oil should be diluted in a carrier oil or product base and patch tested. Avoid sun exposure on skin after applying natural bergamot oil.

Q. Is bergamot oil safe for children and during pregnancy?

Products for young children and for use during pregnancy should only be made after expert safety advice, at very low levels.

Q. Is bergamot oil flammable?

Yes. Bergamot oil is a flammable liquid. Store and ship it away from heat, sparks and flames, as per the MSDS.

Q. What is the shelf life of bergamot oil and how should it be stored?

Bergamot oil keeps for about 1 to 2 years, as citrus oils oxidise faster than most oils. Store it in tightly closed, full, dark containers in a cool place.

Quality and Purity

Q. How can I check if bergamot oil is pure?

A GC test is the best check. Pure bergamot oil has natural limonene, linalyl acetate and linalool levels and a natural chiral profile. Added synthetic linalyl acetate or cheaper citrus oils change the profile.

Q. Which ISO standard applies to bergamot oil?

ISO 3520 covers bergamot oil. It sets the expected density, refractive index, optical rotation and ester content.

Q. Which allergens are in bergamot oil?

Bergamot oil naturally contains limonene, linalool, citral and geraniol. Batch allergen and bergapten values are given on request for labelling and IFRA calculations.
