Himalayan cedarwood oil is called Devdaru oil or Deodar oil in Hindi, from the deodar tree, Cedrus deodara.

Q. What is the difference between Himalayan and Virginia cedarwood oil?

Himalayan cedarwood oil (Cedrus deodara) is from India and smells warm, sweet and balsamic. Virginia cedarwood oil (Juniperus virginiana) is from the USA and has a dry, clean pencil-wood note.

Q. What are the main components of cedarwood oil?

Himalayan cedarwood oil is rich in himachalenes and atlantones. Virginia cedarwood oil is rich in cedrene, thujopsene and cedrol.

Q. Is Virginia cedarwood a real cedar?

No. Botanically it is a juniper, Juniperus virginiana, but it is traded worldwide as cedarwood oil.

Q. Which cedarwood oil is best?

It depends on the use. Himalayan cedarwood suits agarbatti, soaps, hair oils and Ayurvedic products. Virginia cedarwood suits fine fragrance, men’s grooming and candles.

Uses of Cedarwood Oil

Q. What is cedarwood oil used for?

Cedarwood oil is used in perfumes as a woody base note and fixative, in soaps, hair oils, beard oils, agarbatti and dhoop, candles, reed diffusers, wardrobe fresheners and outdoor care products.

Q. Is cedarwood oil good for hair?

Cedarwood oil is a popular ingredient in hair oils, scalp oils and beard oils for its warm, woody aroma, usually at 0.5% to 1%, diluted in a carrier oil such as coconut or jojoba oil.

Q. Why is cedarwood oil used as a fixative in perfumes?

Cedarwood oil evaporates slowly, so it holds lighter notes and helps fragrances, soaps and candles keep their aroma for longer.

Q. Is cedarwood oil good for sleep and relaxation?

Cedarwood oil is often used in calming diffuser blends and pillow sprays with lavender, for its warm, grounding aroma. These are aroma products, not medicines.

Q. Does cedarwood oil keep moths away?

Cedarwood oil is used in wardrobe fresheners and sachets for its fresh woody aroma. In India, a product can only be sold as an insect repellent after registration with CIB&RC.

Q. What blends well with cedarwood oil?

Lavender, bergamot FCF, sweet orange, frankincense, sandalwood, vetiver, patchouli, ylang ylang and rosemary all blend well with cedarwood oil.

Safety of Cedarwood Oil

Q. Can cedarwood oil be applied directly to the skin?

No. Cedarwood oil should be diluted in a carrier oil or product base, usually to 1% to 2% in body products, and patch tested.

Q. Is cedarwood oil safe for children and during pregnancy?

Products for young children and for use during pregnancy should only be made after expert safety advice, at very low levels.

Q. Can cedarwood oil be swallowed?

No. Cedarwood oil may be harmful if swallowed and must be kept out of reach of children.

Q. What is the shelf life of cedarwood oil and how should it be stored?

Cedarwood oil keeps for about 3 years in sealed original packing, as woody oils age well. Store it in tightly closed, full containers in a cool, dark place, away from heat.

Q. Why does cedarwood oil become thick in winter?

Some cedarwood oils thicken or turn cloudy in cold weather because of their heavy natural components. Warm the container gently and mix. Quality is not affected.

Quality and Purity

Q. How can I check if cedarwood oil is pure?

A GC-MS test is the best check. It confirms the species, with himachalenes for Himalayan cedarwood and cedrene and cedrol for Virginia cedarwood, and reveals any added solvents or other oils.

Q. Which ISO standards apply to cedarwood oil?

ISO 4724 covers Virginia cedarwood oil. Himalayan cedarwood oil is tested against in-house specifications based on its typical density, refractive index and GC profile.

Q. Which allergens are in cedarwood oil?

Cedarwood oil has a low allergen content compared with most essential oils. Batch allergen values are given on request for labelling and IFRA calculations.
