What is Cinnamon Oil?

  • Cinnamon oil is an essential oil steam-distilled from the true cinnamon tree, Cinnamomum zeylanicum, grown mainly in Sri Lanka and South India.
  • It comes in two very different grades: Cinnamon Leaf Oil, rich in eugenol with a warm, clove-like spice, and Cinnamon Bark Oil, rich in cinnamaldehyde with the classic sweet, hot cinnamon aroma.
  • It is widely used in candles, home fragrance, soaps, potpourri, agarbatti, aromatherapy, and in food and oral care flavours by licensed manufacturers.
  • Cinnamon oils are strong and can irritate skin, so they are used at low levels and bark oil is generally kept out of skin products.
  • Liana Health Care supplies it in bulk and private-label packs from Meerut, Uttar Pradesh, with a COA with every batch.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q. What is the difference between cinnamon leaf oil and cinnamon bark oil?

  • Add "Keep away from skin and eyes" on home fragrance products and avoid medical claims.

Common mistakes

  • Using cinnamon bark oil in skin products.
  • Storing cinnamon oil in iron containers, which darkens it.
  • Using too much cinnamon in a blend, so it overpowers everything else.

  • Trial packs from 100 ml for R&D, bulk packs up to 200 kg for production.
  • Cinnamon oil plus clove, orange, cedarwood and soap bases from one supplier.
  • White label and contract manufacturing for brands without their own factory.

Answers from the quality team at Liana Health Care Pvt. Ltd., Meerut, India, a bulk supplier, wholesaler and exporter of cinnamon bark oil and cinnamon leaf oil since 2010.

Cinnamon Oil Basics

Q. What is cinnamon oil?

Cinnamon oil is an essential oil steam-distilled from the Ceylon cinnamon tree, Cinnamomum zeylanicum, grown mainly in Sri Lanka. It has a warm, sweet, spicy aroma and is used in flavours, oral care, perfumery, soaps, candles and home fragrance.

Q. What is cinnamon called in Hindi?

Cinnamon is called Dalchini in Hindi, so cinnamon oil is known as Dalchini oil or Dalchini ka tel.

Q. What is the difference between cinnamon bark oil and cinnamon leaf oil?

Cinnamon bark oil is rich in cinnamaldehyde (about 55% to 75%), with a rich, sweet cinnamon aroma, and is strong on skin. Cinnamon leaf oil is rich in eugenol (about 70% to 85%), with a warm, clove-type spice note, and is milder and much cheaper.

Q. What is the difference between cinnamon oil and cassia oil?

Cinnamon oil comes from Ceylon cinnamon (Cinnamomum zeylanicum). Cassia oil comes from Chinese cinnamon (Cinnamomum cassia), has very high cinnamaldehyde and a harsher aroma, and contains coumarin.

Q. Which cinnamon oil is best?

Cinnamon bark oil is best for food flavours, oral care and fine fragrance. Cinnamon leaf oil gives the best value for soaps, candles, home care and incense.

Uses of Cinnamon Oil

Q. What is cinnamon oil used for?

Cinnamon oil is used in bakery and beverage flavours, chewing gum, toothpaste and mouthwash, spicy and oriental perfumes, soaps, festive candles, potpourri, room sprays and incense.

Q. Is cinnamon oil good for skin?

Cinnamon bark oil is a strong skin sensitiser and is not suitable for leave-on skin products except at very low IFRA levels. Cinnamon leaf oil is milder and is used at low levels in soaps and body products.

Q. Can cinnamon oil be used in candles and soaps?

Yes. Cinnamon leaf oil is the usual choice for candles, soaps and potpourri, often blended with sweet orange and clove for a festive spice aroma.

Q. Is cinnamon oil used in food?

Yes. Flavour grade cinnamon bark oil is widely used in bakery, beverages, confectionery and chewing gum. Food use needs flavour grade oil and the required food licences.

Q. What blends well with cinnamon oil?

Sweet orange, clove, nutmeg, ginger, cardamom, vanilla, cedarwood, frankincense and patchouli all blend well with cinnamon oil.

Safety of Cinnamon Oil

Q. Can cinnamon oil be applied directly to the skin?

No. Cinnamon oil, especially bark oil, can cause strong skin irritation and allergic reactions. It must always be diluted to very low levels and patch tested.

Q. Which cinnamon oil is safer for skin products?

Cinnamon leaf oil is much milder than cinnamon bark oil and is the preferred choice for soaps and body products, at about 0.5% or below.

Q. Is cinnamon oil safe for children and during pregnancy?

Cinnamon oil should not be used in products for young children. Products for use during pregnancy should only be made after expert safety advice.

Q. Can cinnamon oil be swallowed?

No. Concentrated cinnamon oil should not be swallowed. Only flavour grade oil may be used in food, at approved levels, by licensed food manufacturers.

Q. What is the shelf life of cinnamon oil and how should it be stored?

Cinnamon oil keeps for about 2 to 3 years in sealed original packing. Store it in tightly closed, full containers in a cool, dark place. As with clove oil, iron or copper containers can darken it.

Quality and Purity

Q. How can I check if cinnamon oil is pure?

A GC test is the best check. It confirms the cinnamaldehyde level in bark oil and the eugenol level in leaf oil, and reveals added cassia oil, synthetic cinnamaldehyde or clove leaf oil.

Q. Which ISO standards apply to cinnamon oil?

ISO 3524 covers Ceylon cinnamon leaf oil and ISO 3216 covers cassia oil. They set the expected density, refractive index and main component ranges.

Q. Which allergens are in cinnamon oil?

Cinnamon bark oil contains cinnamaldehyde, eugenol and linalool, and cinnamon leaf oil contains eugenol and benzyl benzoate. Cinnamaldehyde has strict IFRA limits, so batch values are given on request.
