What Are Essential Oils?

Essential oils are highly concentrated, volatile aromatic compounds extracted from specific plant material — leaves, flowers, bark, roots, seeds, resin, or peel — through steam distillation, cold pressing, or solvent extraction. They capture the true chemical essence and fragrance character of the source plant, along with the bioactive compounds responsible for the plant's therapeutic properties.

The name "essential" reflects the plant's "essence" — the complete aromatic and biochemical character concentrated in the oil. A single drop of pure essential oil contains the equivalent aromatic and active compound content of dozens to hundreds of grams of the fresh plant material — making essential oils among the most potent and most concentrated natural ingredients used in manufacturing.

Essential oils are not the same as fragrance oils — fragrance oils are synthetic or blended aromatic compounds designed only for scent. Essential oils are genuine plant extracts containing the full spectrum of naturally occurring bioactive compounds — terpenes, phenylpropanoids, esters, aldehydes, ketones, and alcohols — that give each oil its unique therapeutic, aromatherapeutic, and functional character.

Extraction Methods — How Our Essential Oils Are Produced

Understanding extraction methods helps manufacturers choose the right grade and understand quality specifications :

Steam Distillation — Primary Method

Steam distillation is widely used essential oil extraction method —including Rosemarylavender, eucalyptus, peppermint, tea tree, lemongrass, clove, cedarwood, vetiver, frankincense, and most other herbal, woody, and resinous oils.

In steam distillation — steam passes through plant material, vaporising the volatile aromatic compounds. The steam and aromatic vapour mixture is then condensed back to liquid — the essential oil separates from the water (hydrosol or floral water) due to density difference and is collected.

Cold Pressing — Citrus Oils

Cold pressing (mechanical expression) is mostly used for citrus peel essential oils — lemon, orange, bergamot, grapefruit, lime, and mandarin. The citrus peel is mechanically pressed or abraded to rupture the oil glands in the peel, releasing the essential oil, which is then separated by centrifugation.

Cold pressed citrus oils retain the fresh, bright, vivid aroma character of the citrus peel — something that cannot be fully replicated by steam distillation. The trade-off is that cold pressed citrus oils contain non-volatile compounds (waxes, coumarins including bergapten in bergamot) that are not present in steam-distilled versions.
