  • The nutmeg tree grows in Kerala, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu in India, and in Indonesia, Sri Lanka and Grenada.
  • The oil is rich in monoterpenes (sabinene and pinenes) and contains myristicin, which gives its warm, sweet, spicy character.
  • It is used in flavours, perfumery, warming massage and balm products, soaps, candles, oral care and traditional Ayurvedic preparations.
  • Mace oil (Javitri oil) comes from the red aril around the same seed and has a softer, sweeter spicy aroma.

Formulator tips

  • Spray into the air, not on furniture or fabric.
  • If cloudy, raise Polysorbate 20 to 5% and reduce water.

Caution: Not for skin. Do not spray near the face, eyes, pets or open flames.

Quality Checks, Labelling and Common Mistakes

Quality checks

  • Keep one sample at 40–45°C for 2 to 4 weeks and check for changes, and retain a sample of every batch.

Labelling

  • Show product name, ingredients, net quantity, batch number, manufacturing and expiry dates, and manufacturer details.
  • List allergens such as limonene and eugenol where required.
  • Use wording like "warming massage oil" rather than medical claims such as "cures joint pain".

Common mistakes

  • Using too much nutmeg oil. It is strong and should stay at low levels.
  • Using cinnamon bark oil in place of cinnamon leaf oil in skin products.
  • Adding essential oil to water without a solubiliser.

Start Small, Scale Up with Liana Health Care

  • Trial packs from 100 ml for R&D, bulk packs up to 200 kg for production.
  • Nutmeg and mace oils plus carrier oils, soap bases and other essential oils from one supplier.
  • White label and contract manufacturing for brands without their own factory.
