Grade II values fall between I and III. Values are typical ranges. Actual results for each lot are reported on the batch Certificate of Analysis (COA).

Composition varies with origin, harvest and distillation. A full GC-MS report is supplied on request.

Ylang Ylang Oil Uses and Starter Formulations for Startups and Learners

Choosing the right grade, use levels and 6 practical formulas for body oil, hair oil, roll-on perfume, body butter, soap and reed diffuser

• Startups and small brands planning body oils, hair oils, natural perfumes, body butters, soaps or home fragrance with ylang ylang.
• Students and learners in natural perfumery, skin care, soap making and aromatherapy.
• Small manufacturers testing products at 50 g to 1 kg scale before bulk production.
• Why ylang ylang: a rich, exotic floral that makes simple products smell luxurious, and only a little is needed.
• All formulas are in % w/w and grams, so they scale up easily. 1% = 1 g in a 100 g batch.

Ylang ylang is strong and can cause skin sensitivity. Keep skin products below about 0.8%, check the IFRA limit for your product type, and blend it with lighter oils such as lavender, bergamot FCF or sweet orange.

A silky, exotic body oil for spas and skin care brands.

Batch size: 100 ml

Method

1. Weigh the carrier oils into a beaker.
2. Add vitamin E and the essential oils and stir well.
3. Fill into amber bottles with a pump or flip cap.

Formulator tips

• Add 0.5% sandalwood or cedarwood oil for a warmer version.
• Use fractionated coconut oil for a nut-free product.

Caution: Patch test before use. Avoid eyes.

A glossy, fragrant hair oil, a classic use of ylang ylang.

Batch size: 100 ml

Method

1. Warm the coconut oil until liquid if needed.
2. Mix in sesame and castor oil.
3. Add vitamin E and the essential oils and stir well.
4. Fill into bottles with a flip cap.

Formulator tips

• Use fractionated coconut oil if you want the product to stay liquid in winter.
• Massage into the scalp and leave for 1 hour before washing.

Caution: Patch test before use. Avoid eyes.

An alcohol-free natural perfume, easy to make and sell in small roll-ons.

Batch size: 50 g (five 10 ml roll-ons)

Method

1. Weigh the jojoba oil into a clean glass beaker.
2. Add the essential oils one by one using a fine scale (0.01 g).
3. Stir, cover and let the blend mature for 48 hours.
4. Fill into 10 ml glass roll-on bottles.

Formulator tips

• Use bergamot FCF (furocoumarin-free) to avoid sun sensitivity.
• Letting the blend rest for 1 to 2 weeks makes the aroma smoother.

Caution: Patch test before use. Avoid eyes and broken skin.

A light, fluffy body butter, a best seller for gifting.

Batch size: 100 g

Method

1. Melt shea butter and coconut oil gently.
2. Add almond oil and arrowroot powder and stir well.
3. Chill until the edges start to set (about 20 to 30 minutes).
4. Add vitamin E and essential oils and whip with a hand mixer for 5 minutes until fluffy.
5. Spoon into jars.

Formulator tips

• If the butter melts in summer, store it in a cool place.
• Whip again if it becomes dense.

Caution: Patch test before use. Avoid eyes.

An easy floral soap with no lye handling.

Batch size: 1 kg (about ten 100 g bars)

Method

1. Cut the soap base into cubes and melt at 60–65°C. Do not boil.
2. Cool to about 55°C, add the oils and colour and stir gently.
3. Pour into moulds, spray with rubbing alcohol and set 2 to 4 hours.
4. Wrap the bars at once to keep the aroma.

Formulator tips

• Grade III is cost-effective and holds well in soap.
• Add a few dried rose petals on top for a premium look.

Caution: Keep away from eyes. Stop use if irritation occurs.

A long-lasting home fragrance product with high margins.

Batch size: 100 ml

Method

1. Mix the essential oils together first.
2. Add the blend to the diffuser base and stir well.
3. Rest for 24 hours, then fill into glass bottles and add reeds.

Formulator tips

• Flip the reeds once a week to refresh the aroma.
• A narrow-neck bottle makes the diffuser last longer.

Caution: Keep away from children, pets, open flames and polished surfaces. Not for skin.

Quality checks

• Keep one sample at 40–45°C for 2 to 4 weeks and check for changes, and retain a sample of every batch.

Labelling

• Show product name, ingredients, net quantity, batch number, manufacturing and expiry dates, and manufacturer details.
• List allergens such as linalool, benzyl benzoate and benzyl salicylate where required.
• Use wording like "relaxing floral aroma" rather than medical claims.

Common mistakes

• Using too much ylang ylang. Above 1% it can smell heavy and cause skin sensitivity.
• Using expensive Extra grade in soaps and candles where grade III works well.
• Adding essential oil to water without a solubiliser.

• Trial packs from 100 ml for R&D, bulk packs up to 200 kg for production.
• Ylang ylang in all grades, plus carrier oils, soap bases and other essential oils from one supplier.
• White label and contract manufacturing for brands without their own factory.
