The balsam is harvested from mature trees by a traditional method involving repeated wounding of the bark — the tree exudes oleoresin in response to the wounds which is collected, then separated from the bark material by boiling in water. The result is a dark reddish-brown to black, viscous, sticky liquid with an extraordinarily rich, complex, warm, vanilla-like, balsamic, and slightly cinnamon-like aroma.
The chemical composition of Balsam Peru is extraordinary in its complexity — a mixture of free benzoic acid, cinnamic acid, benzyl benzoate, benzyl cinnamate, cinnamein (benzyl cinnamate + benzyl benzoate mixture), nerolidol, farnesol, vanillin, and many minor compounds — creating the characteristic rich, warm, vanilla-cinnamon-balsamic aroma that is one of the most distinctive and universally loved natural aromatic profiles available.
Top Note: Warm, vanilla-sweet, slightly medicinal, and richly balsamic. Rich vanilla-like warmth with subtle cinnamon spice and characteristic balsamic depth.
Middle Note: Rich, warm, vanilla-balsamic, cinnamon-sweet, and deeply complex. Warm vanilla-cinnamon character with underlying balsamic depth, slight floral quality from farnesol and nerolidol, and characteristic resinous warmth.
